More Evangelicals returning to Catholic practice?

Shalom! I’m wondering if anyone else has noticed that more and more Evangelicals seem to be returning to Catholic practice, if not Catholic faith.

Case in point: Dr. Grant R. Jeffrey wrote an excellent book of Biblical Archeology titled, “Unveiling Mysteries of the Bible”. One thing I noticed several times in the book was how he used scripture and logic to show the truth of several Catholic beliefs. Unfortunately, he would turn away from the last possible minute in extending his logic to the logical conclusion, since that would have meant supporting Catholic doctrine. One case in point was where he was using scripture to support the idea of Mary being the Ark of the New Covenant. One line of discussion would have resulted in his supporting the Immaculate Conception; however, he turned aside at the last possible moment before arriving at that conclusion.

I am seeing more and more Protestant Bible teachers running into that same problem. Another case in point: There is an evangelist named Perry Stone. I usually like watching his TV program, “Manna-fest”, because he is a good showman and I enjoy his explanations of Israelite practices. At the end of his program last week (Program #413, The Prophecy of Restitution - 1967 Until Today), he had “something special, that we’ve never offered before!” It turned out to be his new book, “The Meal That Heals”, along with a special communion kit! He wants to encourage people to bring back “the custom from the First Century of sharing communion every day.” Except in the book, he’s very careful to explain how what he is talking about is not Catholic communion.

In any case, I can see hundreds upon hundreds of people starting up the practice of daily communion in their own homes.

So does anyone else see Protestants re-instituting Catholic practices that had been abandoned by Luther and Calvin?

Well, not that I’m seeing it personally here in my area, but seeking the practices of the early Christians is how Alex Jones found his way Home to Rome! His story is told in the DVD No Price Too High saintjoe.com/prodinfo.asp?number=9114

He researched and gave his congregation a real New Testament worship service. In thirty short days of reading the Fathers of the Church he came face-to-face with the Truth. He had found the Apostolic Church. There he found a liturgical and hierarchical Church where the center of worship was not great preaching or even the movement of the Spirit, but the Holy Eucharist. The Church founded by Jesus was a Sacramental Church.

I saw this when it aired on EWTN and it is excellent. Jones is studying for the deaconate, but I seem to recall reading he really wants ordination. His wife converted after he did.

I love conversion stories!!

God bless,
Mimi

I just saw Deacon Jones speak a few weeks ago in Gaylord, MI - he is awesome. I borrowed his explanation of the ECF for the “How are you—personally—sure the Catholic Church is the Church of Jesus Christ?” thread.

He said something like (I’m paraphrasing) “If you want to know what happened at an accident, who do ask? Someone who witnessed it or someone who came along 1500 years later and said ‘No, this is the way it really happened.’”

He is a very engaging speaker. I thought it was so funny how he stuttered on the word “C-c-catholic” - it just goes to show that the HS can work in the paces we least expect!
