I do believe the communion of Saints. There is a question I have wanted to ask but was afraid to ask it in a wrong way. Let me start with the following.
A person dislikes her son’s girl friend. On top of her brainwashing her son, she offered many many Masses for the souls in purgatory and prayed a thousand times per day (yes, she said she literally use rosary beads to count a thousand times of “Jesus I trust in you” for the souls in purgatory, asking their help to break them up. She also asked me to pray that they would break up soon. I told her I would pray for God’s will be done in her son’s life.
As a mother, she is surly entitled to have her own opinion, but I didn’t feel right to pray for somebody to break up. Her first reason against the girl was her face was bad looking, while to me, she was just ordinary, cannot be called pretty. A few days ago, she told me her son decided to break up with his girl friend.
She credited this result to the intercession of souls in Purgatory. I guess we can say it must be God’s will for her son not to continue dating this girl. But what do you think about her approach? I feel we ought to pray for the souls in purgatory out of love instead of the mentality of interest exchange. I expressed my view and her response was “but there is nothing wrong to exchange interest”.
Our prayer should always be God’s will first. While the intercession of souls in Purgatory are powerful, we should never take it as rubbing the lamp. What do you say about it?

Given that the mother’s reason for wanting her son to break up with the girl were trivial like the way the girl’s face looks, I think that you were right to pray that God’s Will be done in the life of the boy, instead of what the mother asked you to pray for.
There is nothing wrong with asking the Holy Souls in Purgatory for legitimate favours.The saints actually did this themselves when they were on the earth.

Asking for favours from the Holy Souls in Purgatory, does not mean that you do not love them. When I am sick in bed I ask my daughter to make me a cup of tea. I love my daughter even though I have asked her for her help. I am prepared to do a lot for her.
We are in a family that consists of: the family in heaven, the family on earth, and the family in Purgatory. We all help and love each other.

That’s a good point. I think it brings closer to my question. The communion of Saints is out of charity. If I pray for another person, I simply see the person’s need and intercede for his benefit, not my benefit. I am not praying for another person so he will return my favor in the future. That’s where my original question comes from. The question is on motivation.
Shouldn’t we pray for the souls in purgatory out of love instead a *motivation *of exchanging interest? I was wondering if the approach of saying certain prayer verse 1000 times a day to speed up the desired answer is commendable or not?

This is a little off base, but I was wondering if the Holy Souls are present at mass along with the angels and saints?
I have a devotion to the Holy Souls, but I’m sorry to say it’s not the most consistent (though much better since my Grandfather recently died).

There are different levels of motivation for doing things. One person’s motivation can be higher than another person’s motivation, but each level of motivation is good.
Venerable Pauline Jaricot founded an organisation which is called the Living Rosary which calls for the members to say a one decade of the Rosary each day.
If I remember correctly she was criticized because it was thought that it would take people away from praying the whole Rosary. The point was that people in France in the nineteenth century had largely fallen away from the church and Pauline’s endeavours were helping to re-evangelise them.
In relation to this there is a saying that goes something like this:
The best is always the enemy of the good.
In relation to Pauline’s Living Rosary, the one decade was supposed to be no good for people, because they were supposed to be saying the full Rosary, however hardly anyone in her day in France was actually saying any prayers at all.
It is good to say prayers for the Holy Souls in Purgatory many times a day, but we have to fit it in with our other duties, like hanging out the washing for instance. That is a great time to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. It will get many of them out of Purgatory.St Gertrude the Great did exactly this and got many souls out of Purgatory.

Some of the Holy Souls by a special privilege granted to them by God, serve out their Purgatory near the Blessed Sacrament in churches. So that means that those particular souls would be present at Mass. I have not personally seen any of them! I read about this in books which detail some private apparitions of souls who are serving their Purgatory in this way.

I will ask Fr. Daniel, a theologian and censor for publications of a large archdiocese. I have never thought of the Holy Souls attending Masses. I do believe that we may ask God to be the Holy Souls vicar at the Masses we attend. Particularly if we go to two Masses on Sunday, one for them and one for ourselves. It certainly would not be a sin. Some exorcists recommend dedicating a Hail Mary for someone by replacing "pray for us sinners" with "pray for (name), a sinner, now and at the hour of their death." This is how one should pray to gain graces to bring about the Liberation of those suffering from some sort of extraordinary diabolical action. Praying for Deliverance is this manner requires you to say more prayers.
St. Gertrude prayed for others all her Earthly life here. She was granted many graces. She suffered the Sacred Wounds of Christ in Stigmata. She got to Heaven this way by offering everything for the sake of others.

wow…maybe the mother had other reasons for not liking the girlfriend?..either way if they broke up then it was god will that her prayers were answered…and the thousands of prayers and countless masses will certainly have benefitted the holy souls…

i like the sound of that!..i guess anybody devoted to praying for the dying could use that prayer too…
wonder how the exorcists knew it would be beneficial to the dying person to say that prayer

Forgive my ignorance, but i have some questions about the Holy Souls in Purgatory. I just came back home to the Catholic church and im learning alot.
- What does it mean to offer Mass for the souls in purgatory, am i to contact the priest for this, or is it just within myself that I do this?
- What does it mean to offer up “my merits”?
- Can we pray specifically for the release of the soul of a friend or family member and how do we know if their soul has reached Heaven?

You give a priest a Mass offering, i.e. some money, and ask him to say a Mass for the relief of the Holy Souls in Purgatory. It can be for a specific soul e.g. your mother.
Bishop’s conferences in each country make a stipulation on the minimum amount that is expected. In Australia I think that it is $10.00
The money is not for buying a Mass, because that simply can’t be done, and it is not allowed. It is to support the priest.
A priest who offers Masses, hears Confessions, baptizes babies, visits the sick, etc. can’t live on thin air.
He has expenses like everyone else, e.g. food, electricity, and petrol for his car to get around and so on.
You can also attend Mass on behalf of the Souls in Purgatory. (This is not on as high a level as having the priest offer a Mass at your request, but it is still good. You can do both).
It is actually the satisfactory merits that we offer up. I have read the explanation of this a number of times, but I don’t understand it very well.
I guess that it is something like this. I do a good deed, e.g. I give food to the poor. That action has a value. It also has a merit, (which I think means a certain amount of good). It is this part which can be offered for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
I guess it’s as though The Holy Souls in Purgatory have done the act themselves, and have gained a remission from their sufferings.
We can pray for any specific soul. We usually do not find out if they have reached heaven, unless we are a St. Padre Pio type.
The souls used to come and ask him for his prayers, and then come back to thank him on their way to heaven.
To make an offering for the Holy Souls, you simply say to God that you are making the offering.

“With death the possibility of merit or demerit or conversion ceases.” (Sent. certa.) From Ott, The Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma.
This means that anyone in purgatory can no longer merit, and they must be purged in purgatory for their past. Unless…someone who can merit(we), offers their merit up to God in their behalf which lessons the purgatory in some way. We on earth can merit by both our good works and our prayers. Prayers are sacraments, sacramentals, private devotions, rosary, or any other prayer we wish to offer in their behalf, the Mass being the greatest. Good works would be penance, sufferings (every day trials), acts of charity, resisting temptation, patience, …
“By good works performed in the state of grace the Faithful on earth can merit de congruo gifts from God.” (Sent. probabilis.) From Ott, the Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma.
Only a person in the state of grace may merit. Merit is another word for spiritual/supernatural reward. We must be in the friendship of God to merit. However, according to ST Catherine of Siena, a doctor of the church, she says that God being all just, will reward the person in some way for their good works, even if only temporal reward.
