Recall that this was the age when the monk Copernicus was denounced by the Church for theorizing that the earth rotated around the sun

I recall reading yesterday that Copernicus was so frightened he didnt publish til on his death bed, oh, and the Church tortured Galileo to death over it lol. I suppose any close (in their minds) version will do.

The speculation will always be that, speculation. There is no way to know what the mans motivations were. Who thinks of the Sistine Chapel as a 500 yr old puzzle waiting to be solved? There is no way to “solve” anything re a puzzle! The man is dead & left us his art, not a detailed treatise on why he painted thusly. I would like to just look at the beauty of it & marvel at his God given talent. Im sure the Dan Browns of the world see things differently. 🤷

what i meant by saying that was its from ayriana huffington’s site…i dont go there because i do not trust that lady. not trying to be offensive i just dont trust her
That is not a response. You don’t trust her so you don’t read the article?

Autdrew,**

It is hard to give anyone’s argument credibility when their facts are as false as Dan Brown’s “facts”.

i recommend that if you are searching for the Truth, you stop listening to urban legends & research using credible sources.

Read this CA article “The Galileo Controversy” catholic.com/library/Galileo_Controversy.asp

#1: “Copernicus refrained from publishing his heliocentric theory for some time, not out of fear of censure from the Church, but out of fear of ridicule from his colleagues.”

#2: Galileo was never tortured & was “In the end, Galileo recanted his heliocentric teachings, but it was not—as is commonly supposed—under torture nor after a harsh imprisonment. Galileo was, in fact, treated surprisingly well.”**

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

i get angry at the things she writes, i have high blood pressure i dont intentionally read, watch, involve myself in things that will most assuradly make my blood pressure spike:)

I was interested in the article because I remember reading before that the cloak God is riding on in the Creation of Adam was intended to be in the shape of a brain, suggesting that God is Knowledge and the source of Truth.

The part about Copernicus gave the whole bias of the article away though. Yes, I could see putting some anatomical elements into the ceiling being a part of Michelangelo’s composition, but saying that he did it as an observation of the divide between science and religion is not the reality of history.

I also am not surprised considering the source of the article.

Also, the observation of the difference in light source is interesting, but I do not see it as leading to the same conclusion. In a panel showing God separating light from dark, the “light” is not the actual source of light. In Genesis, God created the sun on the 4th day. This strange progression - the separation of light and dark before the creation of a light source - is emphasized through the panel.

Michelangelo did quite a bit of studying in preparation of this work. As an artist, the light source is very important in composition, and you do not defy this principle unless it somehow furthers the meaning. By lighting the image of God from a source separate from the light in the panel, he is emphasizing that His is in the act of defining light, light does not define Him.

Mark 77,
I am sorry, I was being sarcastic in my response. I know very well that the Copernicus & Galileo stories are fabrications of what actually happened. I will try harder next time to make myself more clear. I know sarcasm doesnt translate as well into print. Thank you for your response.
