By What Authority?, Mark Shea – A former Protestant talks himself out of believing Sola Scriptura.

Super ditto!

Also,

What is Secular Humanism? By James Hitchcock.

Understanding the Scriptures. Scott Hahn wrote this high school textbook and it is astounding. Suitable for any age.

Here are a couple of suggestions:

Fundamentals of the Faith:Essays in Christian Apologetics by Peter Kreeft–Very insightful (so far) and provides very logical arguments for the Church and against disbelief.

The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn–This work describes how the Mass is what the Book of Revelation talks about when it describes “Heavenly Worship.” Also very insightful.

Hail, Holy Queen by Scott Hahn–His new one, this one talks about “The Mother of God in the Word of God” Just cracked it the other day, so I can’t give much of a review. Seems beautiful at the start though.

Please please please tell me if Triumph is worth the five week wait I’d have ordering it from the Uk

For a little heavier reading:

Not By Faith Alone - Robert Sungenis

Not By Scripture Alone - Robert Sungenis

Not By Bread Alone - Robert Sungenis

Jesus, Peter and the Keys - Butler? (Stephen Ray has another book about the Peter and the Papacy that I have read but can’t remember the title of and I enjoy his writings tremendously)

(The above four titles are available at Queenship Publishing)

Catholic Dogma - Ott?

Summa Contra Gentiles - Aquinas

Summa Theologica - Aquinas

Orthodoxy - Chesterton

The Aquinas works can be used as a reference or a topical study. While I find some of his writings to be way over my head…much of it is pretty easy to read…even for me.

Also, don’t forget the Catechism and the Bible.

Triumph isn’t bad at all. It’s especially good at first, but then, to be honest, I got extremely bogged down right before the Middle Ages and it didn’t let up for awhile. However, I don’t think it’s the author’s fault - it’s just that so much happened, you know?

The reviews on the book describe the author’s style as being “breezy”. And it is…he’s sort of flip, but a good writer, with a decidedly Catholic bias.

I had to kind of struggle through, but that was also my first ever history of the church book. I think it’s good.

Well, I’m terribly depressed because I just went over the public library here with a fine tooth comb and found NOTHING I wanted. I managed to get out of there with 3 books though: another history book, a book about St. Francis, and another book that looks like I shouldn’t have even got it, but oh well.

sigh I was trying to save myself some moola…I am a poverty stricken student and all. But after I finish these at the library I might have to break and down buy again. shudder

Thanks for this, 🙂

I’ll give it a try.

I like anything by Scott Hahn.

I have also heard that Transformation in Christ is a good one.

Saints are always good.

You might check out your local parish. Mine has a small library with some of the mentioned selections in it. It’s worth a shot. :coffee: 😃

Get The Imitation of Christ by Thomas A Kempis. One of my favourites.

A couple more ideas for you or others:

Fill out a request form for new books if your library has them.
or
Fill out a form for an Inter-library loan.

For the Triumph book, I went to the librarian and said “Look, I read the Paul Johnson book on the history of Christianity and it’s kinda old, and there was another one from the seventies written by a priest that I had ordered through an interlibrary loan but it’s kinda old too. Isn’t it about time you carried a recent book on the history of Catholicism, I mean we’ve got like a hundred thousand Catholics living in the area.” So they ordered two.

Earlier I did the same with “The Da Vinci Hoax”, I said “look, ya got 5 copies of Dan Brown nonsense, this is a library can we get the facts now? I mean we already have this other one with facts called “Cracking the Da Vinci code” but I read it and it’s really Mickey Mouse”. So they ordered a couple copies of that too. Although that time it was another librarian who said “If you like that kind of book I would recommend the Hiram books”, which are quite anti-catholic, so I knew I had to visit another library branch and try another librarian because my request was not going to be passed along by that person.
…So there’s some bureaucrary but it’s sort of amusing and challenging to have them order decent books. Especially when you look up new arrivals and you see they’ve brought in books on witchcraft, hiram “history”, new religions and so on, we might as well speak up.

Anything by Ann Ball. She is my favorite Catholic writer and her books center on people just like you and I who put their Catholic faith first and lived it. She also writes of Saints. Her books have me in awe and tears. She also wrote “Young Faces of Holiness”

“Witness” by Joseph Terelya regarding his Catholic faith and persecution in USSR. He spent years in prisons but was blessed with apparitions of the Blessed Mother.

“Get Us Out Of Here” by Maria Simma and Nicky Elitz about the souls in Purgatory.

"Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ by Anne Catherine Emmerich

Anything by Bob and Penny Lord whom I have met twice. They are awesome and their books so well researched.

Looks like you have been concentrating on the apologetic and fundamental aspects of Catholicism.

I would lean more towards some inspirational books to help round out your readings.

A few I would recommend:Heaven in Our Hands by Fr. Benedict Groeschel - Good book on the Beatitudes.
Story of a Soul by St. Therese of Lisieux - Her auto-biography
**The Imitation of Christ **by Thomas A. Kempis - Great for meditiation
I hope these help.

Scott Hahn’s tapes on the book of Revelations are the best stuff I have ever heard. Interestingly, Hahn cites The Book of Revelations as being very, very crucial in his conversion. I found that interesting. Also, The Apocolypse is in vogue right now with the Left Behind series and the Late Great Planet Earth stuff. Hahn is extremely scholarly and indepth on these tapes.

“The Four Witnesses” by Rod Bennet. Be ready to have your entire worldview effected. It did me.

Anything and everything by Frank Sheed. Especially “Theology for Beginners” and “Theology and Sanity”

“Unabridged Christianity” by Fr Mario Romero

“Faith of the Early Fathers, vol 1” by Jurgens. Pre-Nicene. Has an index of where beliefs are supported in the writings of the Fathers. .
