the catechism i own is i think the 1999 version. pope JPII commented that it was an excellent way to teach the faith. and in this catechism it says that if someone does not know christ or his church, they may still obtain salvation through a sincere search for god, and striving to know and love him. well, on a recent post, a boy was asking wether or not buddhists go to heaven or hell. so i told him that all who love god and strive to know him can obtain salvation. but then this other perosn comments that this is tottaly false, and that christ is the only way, the poster was catholic. so i tell him what the catechism says, and he tells me i just dont get it. i then tell him what i saw in the catholic times newspaper i get once a month, that our current pope said that salvation is open to all, but the path is narrow. he tells me that since the pope was not using infallibility at the time, this was false, and that this was only the popes opinion. so he basically called JPII a liar, along with our current pope. i mean, just read catechism 1260, or look in the index for “salvation” its all in there. so, without talking in riddles and giving me info that will just confuse me more, please tell me the generall catholic understanding on salvation for non-christians. thanks.

The best answer for this that I know of is from the Catechism of St Pius X:29 Q. But if a man through no fault of his own is outside the Church, can he be saved?
Code:
*A.* If he is outside the Church through no fault of his, that is, if he is in good faith, and if he has received Baptism, or at least has the implicit desire of Baptism; and if, moreover, he sincerely seeks the truth and does God's will as best he can such a man is indeed separated from the body of the Church, but is united to the soul of the Church and consequently is on the way of salvation
The answer is we dont know who meets this criteria, only God knows. The only sure way a person can know the way to Heaven is through following the Catholic Church and that must be our primary focus. The guy you talked to cannot reject the above passage because it was written by Pope St Pius X who reigned in the early 1900s which is long before Pope John Paul II.

Correct. An additional note: The Catholic who said he could not be saved if he did not know Christ is wrong. He is correct that all salvation is through Christ. Huh? The bible talks about some people worshipping an “unknown god” when in effect they were worshipping the God. Also talks about the Gentiles not knowing about God, Jesus and the Law and that they may still be saved. It’s all in the bible. Read, read, read.
