POPE Benedict XVI could emerge as a surprise supporter of married priests, Catholic commentator and former priest Paul Collins said yesterday.

**On the eve of the publication of his new book, God’s New Man, Dr Collins, who is married, said due to the decline in numbers of men entering the priesthood - a worldwide phenomenon - the day could come when there were not enough of them to celebrate the Eucharist. **

I certainly hope so. Wishful thinking that is. I would not like to see married priests in the Latin Rite. Someone correct me if I am wrong but he actually could support married priests if he wanted do.

Yes, he could- priestly celibacy is a matter of discipline- not doctrine- it can change. I think it would be a bad idea for this to be changed though- for one thing, it would “prove” to secular society that the Church can change- and they’ll think they forced the Church to change and will only be even louder on women “priests”, abortion “rights” and gay “rights” issues.

From what I read, it sounded like pure speculation along with wishful thinking, and not based on anything that BXVI has actually said or done. Has he given any recent opinions on this issue?

I don’t have a problem if the Latin Rite encourages more married priests, or if they don’t. I trust she will not do what cannot morally be done, especially since we’ve already had married associate pastor here at our parish and he worked out just fine.

There is enough of a priest shortage in our diocese so they’re overworked enough to challenge them not to lose their prayer life. There is not, as I’ve heard in other places, such a shortage that Masses are not said even every week, as they rotate around and apparently lay-led Communion services or something suffice in the meantime. 😦

Makes me think we’re kind of spoiled when we gripe because some of the twice daily Masses during weekdays are cut down.
