1 Peter 1:8: joy unspeakable and full of glory
Helaman 5:44: joy which is unspeakable and full of glory
How can LDS argue with that at all! Those verses are almost identical!!

What if your “prophet” said that all Mormons (LDS) had to start practicing polygamy again, would you do it? If your doctrine says to have multiple wives, why don’t y’all practice it now?

Lamb,

We’ve been over this many times. It is not if the Prophet said it, it’s if God says it.

For the most part of all time, God has NOT commanded it, but there have been times, mostly when starting over after major apostasies, when he has commanded it. Look at the Bible and you will see this.

At the beginning of the Church, it was commanded. It has been rescinded and since the Gospel will never more be taken from the earth, probably never will be instituted again.

Oh, and one more thing, the main reason it was restored is because Joseph had to restore “All Things”. This was one of those just like all others practiced in the past. And after they were restored, the Lord can command what he wants from there.

Well Mr. Ski likes to say that God put it in a language that they were familiar with and was used everyday. Funny how that language he says everyone used turns out to be the Kings English from accross the ocean and 200 years old and is identical to the KJV of 1611. Also funny that it is not in the King James Versions after Joseph Smiths time isn’t it? Can you just see the people in the 19th century speaking “thee” and “thou”? If you want to really know what the language was like back then, you can read the Declaration of Independence and you will see that is written not in the Kings English but in the language that we use today.

P.S. Has anyone noticed that when I post facts not flattering to the LDS that one Mormon starts spitting out words like “stupid” and “ignorant”? As the bible, (the REAL bible) says “it’s what comes out of the mouth that defiles a person”

Oh ok, I see. So, if the Prophet says that God told him to put it into effect again in todays time, than you would be the “Head Wife” and your husband would have children with other women? In order for the church to grow larger? When did God command it to be stopped? What year, and do you have the article or whatever it would be called where the Prophet told everyone to stop it? Sorry if I’m not making much since when I asked the latter, but I don’t know what it is called when the prophet of your church tells the members of the prohecy he received. Do the prophets today talk directly to God? Sorry, I’m trying to understand more…:o

And if we take verses from the Old Testament and find almost identical ones from the New does that make the New Testament a fraud?

The reasoning here does not make sense at all, it’s like throwing mud at something to see if any sticks.

What exactly is the point of all these comparisons again?

Maybe you should try the same thing with other books that are written and see what the results would be. Oh wait, your not trying to disprove other books, only this one.

Rick,

What seems to be “Facts” to you is not.

We still, today, speak in terms of thee and thou and thy when we are speaking of sacred, spiritual things and when talking to our Father in Heaven.

There is nothing sinister in using language of a spiritual nature to describe spiritual things, even if some want to make it so.

Meg, I’m not trying to prove the Bible! The Bible proves itself. The Book of Mormon is having a lot harder of a time being proved. Do y’all serve wine when doing the Blood of Christ? And do you have to pray for your sins to be forgiven before putting Christ’s Blood and Body inside your body? We call it Communion (sorry I don’t know what y’all call it). Sorry just trying to understand a little better.

Meg, how come y’all do not kneel in church? I noticed my husband was a little shocked that we kneeled the first time he went to Mass with me. Do y’all go to any sort of confession? Do y’all have any Crucifixes in your church or on your church building?
Thanks, Alisha

This is the second time you have posted this. Was that on purpose?

ANYway, IF a prophet said this, AND I confirmed it through my own prayers, well…(shrug) OK.

Wouldn’t affect me any. My husband died fifteen years ago. I don’t have to share him with anybody, and my own chances of getting married again are about the same as being struck by lighting while being eaten by a shark–on a cloudless day in Arizona.

My daughters? Maybe. The one could keep up her career in photography and running the local community theater, while the other one could do what she does best: run a household and love kids. My oldest could share her caregiving responsibilities with a ‘sister-wife,’ but I don’t think my son-in-law would like it much.

Don’t think my sons could handle it, though. The one is a confirmed bachelor who loves his toys too much, and the other one is a long distance truck driver. They both have too much growing up to do before they can make a commitment to ONE wife, never mind more than one.

The thing is, polygamy, properly practiced, is run by the women…and it takes a very strong, patient and special sort of man to deal with it.

So–if the prophet said ‘practice it’ and I, through prayer, had the Holy Ghost confirm it to me, yeah–I’d go along with it.

Don’t see it happening though; I just don’t see the people around me…any of 'em…able to practice it right–and I don’t see the prophet making such a declaration. So “what ifs” are somewhat irrelevant; sorta like saying “what if the Pacific Ocean was split down the middle and Mohammad walked across the bottom to tell the Pope to step down; would you believe in Islam THEN?”

It just ain’t gonna happen.

First off, I’d have a hard time being a wife. At least as long as the commandment for marriage remains between a man and a women.

In 1890 the Lord revealed to President Wilford Woodruff that it was time to end the practice of plural marriage. We have not practiced that since.

Also, in Jacob 3, we read that the Lord gave them commandment to only have one wife. We also read there that this is the commandment given most of the time, and only at certain times is the commandment given otherwise.

I believe this will never change until the Savior comes to rule again. And when he does, everything will be up to him, but I doubt even then. But, I do not know. I guess we’ll all have to wait and see.

A more cogent question is this: If we take verses from the New Testament and find almost identical ones in the Book of Mormon, does that make the Book of Mormon a fraud?

Consider these two passages:
1 Corinthians 13
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
… and the parallel passage from the BOM:
Moroni Chapter 7
42 Wherefore, if a man have faith he must needs have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope.
43 And again, behold I say unto you that he cannot have faith and hope, save he shall be meek, and lowly of heart.
44 If so, his faith and hope is vain, for none is acceptable before God, save the meek and lowly in heart; and if a man be meek and lowly in heart, and confesses by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ, he must needs have charity; for if he have not charity he is nothing; wherefore he must needs have charity.
45 And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
46 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail—
47 But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.
We all know that the Nephites did not have access to the New Testament. So why does Moroni quote St. Paul, from the KJV of the New Testament?

Yes, I know the standard LDS answer - “St. Paul and Moroni both received the same message by revelation.” It just seems strange to non-Mormons that there are so many quotes from the New Testament in the BOM. It strains credulity.

BTW, I do not argue the quotation of OT passages that the BOM claims the Nephites had on the brass plates of Laban. That would be reasonable if Nephites existed and they had the brass plates. But the quotes and paraphrases of the NT in the BOM always seemed unlikely to me, even when I was LDS.

Sorry Meg (or any other LDS who answers this), but I wanted to ask one more question. What are your views on Visions and Apparations to the people who give their entire lives to God? (for example: Sister Lucia, and Medjugorje)

Meg, how come y’all do not kneel in church? I noticed my husband was a little shocked that we kneeled the first time he went to Mass with me. Do y’all go to any sort of confession? Do y’all have any Crucifixes in your church or on your church building?

Why is kneeling in church a requirement for salvation? Why are crucifixes required?

As to confession, we confess…to our Father in Heaven, or if the sin is something that we feel requires it, to our bishop. Repentance is personal.

As for me, I don’t kneel in church and very glad I am that I don’t have to. In fact, I wouldn’t kneel in church if I were a practicing and devout Catholic; it would take four altar boys and a monk to get me back up again, and that would be embarrassing. Not to mention that in the meantime my knees would be screaming at me too loudly for me to get a decent ‘amen’ out. Not through lack of faith, in other words, but purely as a practical matter. Arthritic knees (even those replaced with pure titanium) don’t take well to contact with the ground.

But Alisha? You claim that your husband is a Mormon. As a result, I find that your questions are a bit on the disingenuous side; you have GOT to know better.

Why is kneeling in church a requirement for salvation? Why are crucifixes required?
That is patently silly. Neither kneeling in church nor crucifixes are required for salvation and you know it. Those who are unable to kneel are not expected to do so. They just remain seated and nobody cares. My aged mother, who has arthritis, has not knelt in 20 years. Her salvation is not affected.

Hello Dianaiad,

I appreciate the warm manner you have offered your perspective.
I will do my best to return that same courtesy:)

Are you suggesting that Polygamy ( and Polyandry ) was properly practiced in JS time  ?? ( That it was run by the women ?? )

Are you also suggesting that the Polygamy practiced by JS went down like your contribution " JS prophetized it, Women then were able to pray about it to recieve Holy Ghost confirmation, then after that, gladly participated ??

Thanks for the consideration
Peace,
CJ

Which of us have have ever claimed that visions of devout and faithful people are either false or irrelevant…to them? Faith is a marvelous thing. Some of them may be deluded or nuts–but then the Holy See is rather skeptical about most of them, as well. This is why the path to sainthood, I understand, is a little on the rocky side.

(shrug) As for me, I’m not into seeing the face of Jesus in a grilled cheese sandwich, but if it works for the guy seeing it, fine with me. Who am I to deny a spiritual experience? As long as he sees Jesus SOMEWHERE.

I understand that, Paul. But then, I’m not the one who asked why Mormons don’t do it.

That’s an easy one. Mormons don’t kneel in church because they arose from within a Protestant culture that does not kneel in church.
