Mormon church sticking with Boy Scouts

SALT LAKE CITY – The Boy Scouts of America isn’t going to lose its largest sponsor after all.

The LDS Church announced Wednesday (Aug. 26), that the Utah-based faith will stick with the Scouts after threatening last month to bolt from the youth group and form its own international organization for boys.

“At this time, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will go forward as a chartering organization of BSA, and as in the past, will appoint Scout leaders and volunteers who uphold and exemplify church doctrine, values and standards,” the church’s governing First Presidency of Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said in a news release.

Not so sure that will last -

The rumor in the Scouting community is that this is a temporary move until LDS can solidify a youth program they can get behind 100%.

Unless the LDS had a “Plan B” ready to roll out, they more or less had to stick with BSA for at least another year or so. There is tremendous amount of instutiional inertia and investment behind the BSA/LDS arrangement. To completely change directions in a few months notice really wasn’t a viable option; at least not at this time.

Wouldn’t surprise me to see an “LDS specific” youth group, similar to Scouting, rolled out in the next year or two.

One advantage that the LDS have is the sheer numbers. They commonly do ‘LDS only’ BSA summer camps .

That will certainly help insulate them from troops that would bring along homosexual leaders.

I would be much happier if the Catholic troops did the same, choosing to meet as Catholics at a particular camp over a particular week. The could probably even bring a priest for Daily Mass
