They are very careful to appear mainstream. I only heard a couple of slips.

One was one of the female speakers call9ng God an Exalted Being.

I can’t remember the other. I will have to wait till I can read them.
Ironically, they've worked very hard to mainstream their church at the very time when their more outré teachings would get them a wider hearing among neo-pagans.

And with that, another General Conference is over! It seems like the “groundbreaking” occurrence this conference, after last conference’s lowering of the missionary age, was having two women offer prayers in the GC, for the first and second time in the history of the LDS Church. No new scriptures canonized (I think each conference, many members talk about how hopefully The Living Christ or The Family: A Proclamation to the World, will be canonized…never happens). Seems like the days of having an expanding canon are over. The last update to the D&C was the revelation allowing men of all races to be ordained to the priesthood, when members of black African heritage were denied it (which was ironic to me since during this Conference, there were MULTIPLE references to Africa, how the people there are so spiritual and blessed, even though they have nothing materially, etc. It was very odd how multiple speakers referenced African peoples. It was also ironic because one speaker, I forgot who, talked about how the African peoples are truly blessed children of God, or something like that. Guess he forgot how they were denied the priesthood for so long (for an allegedly unknown reason, ya know, in the Lord’s Church with living prophets), and apparently needed God to give a revelation on that in 1978…).

Another irony in this Conference was a talk (again, this will be easier when the transcripts are released in the coming weeks) about how the Lord has always relied on imperfect people to be His hands, or something like that. Essentially don’t be discouraged by the imperfections of man, as it’s only God and Jesus Christ that are perfect. But then, if God has always relied on imperfect, fallible men, then why did the Apostasy happen? Seems like He allowed the imperfections of man to run down His Church…

Yep, another great Conference! 👍

When you read the transcripts, are actually getting what was said?

Remember the Boyd Packer incident a year or two ago? He said some pretty unkind things, but the transcript was changed to show a kinder view.

I’m thinking a DVR would be better. 😃

Haha. Well, I’ve never done a comparison, though I’d venture to guess that in the vast majority of cases, it’s the same. They also put up the video immediately online (they don’t edit the videos, including Packer’s address), so it’s not like they’re trying to hide anything, at least, not on this matter ;).

Conference is known to be a shot-in-the-arm-faith-confirmer.
I think many Mormons find themselves renewed, and re-committed after watching/reading it.

I find that many Catholics find that is true for them during the seasons of Advent and Lent. They seem to be re-committed to their faith journey.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one!

It’s also fair to say, as a generalized statement, Mormons are far more aware and tuned in to what their leadership is saying than Catholics.

Hard core Catholics pay attention to say what the is coming from the Holy Father, but the average Catholic isnt nearly as much.

Mormons are very aware as to what is coming out of SLC.

Holland’s talk was all about “don’t let facts get in your way”. Basically, if you have questions that can’t be answered, ignore them and concentrate on the good that church does.

Looks like too many folks are leaving due to issues that the LDS have never been able to answer…like archaeology, etc

Well there is the whole re-recording of Poleman’s conference speech that leaves that questionable.
Wikipedia:
Controversial sermon

In the October 1984 general conference of the LDS Church, Poelman delivered a sermon entitled “The Gospel and the Church”. Controversy ensued when the version of his sermon that was published in the November 1984 Ensign magazine differed from the sermon Poelman had delivered orally. According to Poelman’s brother, after Poelman had delivered his sermon, it had been pointed out to him by apostles that have dealt with apostate, often pro-polygamy groups, that the text of his talk might support these groups’ claims that people do not need the LDS Church. In response, Poelman decided to revise the text of the sermon.[6] Videotape copies of general conference that were included in church archives and distributed throughout the church contained Poelman delivering the revised version of his sermon. A “cough track” was included in the retaping to make it appear that the revised sermon was delivered in front of an audience.[7]

One commentator has criticised the changes to the sermon as a dramatic shift in the meaning of Poelman’s address:
Code:
"The rewriting and refilming of Elder Ronald Poelman's October 1984 Conference address, originally a rare and inspiring defense of free agency, so that it became yet another cry for obedience. His text was not edited — his ideas were turned inside out."[8]
Poelman spoke again in general conference after four and a half years

I know a guy who translates the conference talks. He says they are submitted beforehand to someone who reviews and approves them, with the exception of the pres. of the church. The reviewed and approved talks are given to the translators to work on beforehand. He says most of the speakers stick to what they have written, but every once in a while the person will change their talk on the fly. He says the ad lib pres. talk is the hardest to translate, and at one point he couldn’t keep up, so he just summarized with a single sentence.

I don’t know if this submittal/approval process was in place in 1984.

Interesting enough, over the weekend I saw the Book Of Mormon Musical, and essentially, that was one of the themes that was running through it…So, Mormons believe a bunch of weird stuff that changes, can’t be proven, is taking the word of one man, but it makes people happy, so what does it matter? A very secular/atheist POV.

Some Catholics here add the idea that God is with them. Seriously, I can see why so many people choose to not believe anything. If it doesn’t matter, why make it matter? Why have these conversations at all? Why would the Mormon church send out tens of thousands of missionaries if all that matter is the good people are doing? Anyone of any belief, or no belief, can do good.

True.,

it is like “this is the truth!” Then when it is proven untrue “well, it does not matter because we do good things”

hard to argue that logic

If I were LDS, this hard to argue logic would have me headed PDQ for nihilism.

On another board I heard that the priesthood session emphasized getting inactives back into the fold. Great, more home teachers at our door. They were here a few weeks ago looking for my husband.

Too funny.

if truth does not matter once disproven, then I should go back…lol

its true!

its True!

Its True!

Its Not true, but we do good, so it is all ok!
Don’t forget to sing Kumbaya while you’re at it. 😛
