My wife’s co-worker just found out that the Mormon missionaries have been secretly teaching her 15 year-old daughter at the house of an LDS friend in Huntington Beach, CA.

She asked me what she could do to stop it. I informed her that (at least officially) LDS missionaries are not allowed to teach or baptize underage children without parental consent. I also told her that she needs to contact the mission president and tell him she wants this activity stopped immediately or she will press charges and go to the newspapers with the story.

Does anyone have contact info for the mission president that has authority over the missionaries in Huntington Beach, California?

Thanks,

Paul

I found the information. It is the California Long Beach Mission. I got the phone number and the Mission President’s name and forwarded them to the concerned mother.

That mission prez is about to get an ear full I’m afraid.

While the LDS defenders here keep insisting that LDS missionaries do not target or teach children, we keep finding instances where they do. I don’t believe the missionaries would do something against official policy if it really WAS an official policy and not just lip-service to non-members. If the mission prez made it clear that they would not get credit for teaching children without express parental consent, they would stop doing it. Missionaries are motivated by stats, which is why they will teach or baptize anyone they can get away with if it will mean a better number on their weekly reports.

I would love to be a fly on the wall during that conversation…😛

Do we know for certain that these LDS missionaries are aware of the girl’s age? Fifteen year old girls can look older. Has anyone told them she’s 15?

It would probably be better to inform the President of the situation and ask him if this is approved policy. Don’t start off with a harangue and threats.

The missionaries have been teaching her at her friends house, they know how old she is, the missionaries AND the friends parents. These parents actions are deplorable.

I understand that a parent would be upset that their child is being taught another faith tradition. However, let us not forget that a 15 year old girl is at or above the age of discernment and has the capability to make that decision for herself. Also, lets not forget that Christianity actively evangelizes people of all ages (including minors) across the globe. Before having a militant response towards the LDS, the parent should make sure they have been available and open to answering the spiritual questions that the daughter obviously has. Lets not forget that we (Christians) have the best answers to life’s toughest questions. I bet providing those answers to the daughter would go a long way with correcting this ‘issue’.

Sneaking around parents backs is never acceptable.

You’re a very kind man, Joe, but…

The only thing Mormon authorities take seriously is the threat of lawsuits and bad publicity. If you just ask them a question they will lie, deflect and dance around the issue and you will get no result. I’m sure the prez would assure the mother that the teaching will stop and then do nothing to stop it.

Sort of like the repeated assurances that they will stop dead-dunking holocaust victims. Hasn’t happened yet…

Too bad. The Mormons will work the girl against her own parents. Nothing but a sad ending to come from this.

Yes, if this pattern stays true to form, the LDS parents will encourage the 15 year-old to call them “mom” and “dad” and style themselves as her “new parents”. Then they will convince the girl that her real parents are “unworthy” and get her to cut off communications with them.

This is the pattern that is repeated over and over in the tales of woe told on “Mormons Have My Child” - a google email forum I belong to. This pattern of emotionally stealing children from their parents is SOP in Mormon culture.

I know it is not “official Mormon doctrine” but it is a staple of Mormon culture.

Very sad.

What would be the basis for the lawsuit? Are their laws saying a 15 year old has to receive permission from her parents to learn about another religion?

That’s nonsense.

Absolutely deplorable.

The age, 15, is a non issue. She’s old enough not to be called “under age” in this case.

What is deplorable is mormans conducting mission activity in the area.

I would recommend stopping the young lady from attending these services immediately and having her attend meetings with a Christian counsler (preacher, deacon) to have the mormon beliefs discounted by Biblical Truth.

I sincerely hope you’re able to stop this.

I wonder if you would feel the same if your 15 year-old daughter was getting love-bombed by Moonies or the Church of Scientology.

The LDS church respects the family structure, so the mission president will obviously take it more seriously if the parents contact him directly rather than having some ranting busybody yelling at him over the phone.

It is the girl’s mother who asked for the contact information. I supplied it and she called him yesterday. I haven’t heard yet what the mission president said.

 That’s awful!! Especially with the high value that Mormons claim for the family structure, certainly they should NOT be doing that!!

They certainly don’t respect non-member families this is clearly shown by their actions. Adult members of a church conspiring to proselytize non-member children shows a total lack of respect for the parents of these children. I note also that the LDS here agree with these methods, this lines up with what I’ve read elsewhere. In fact I’ve encountered this very discussion so frequently that I am convinced it is SOP for members of the LDS church as a result I am suspicious of the LDS parents among my children’s friends. The list of kids I actively encourage my children to associate with has changed due to this.

Deception is bad fruit, it destroys trust.

My parents, who have taken a week’s leave from their mission in the Congo to attend my brother’s wedding, confirm that missionaries are still instructed unambiguously to not teach minor kids without parental consent.

I’m curious, how would your church handle this if one parent agreed but the other did not?

That’s almost exactly what I said. If none of your priests have ever done anything that conflicts with the core values of your church, then I congradulate you.
