Shame on the people that did this. If they were indeed missionaries then they should be doubly shamed. Now, before anyone gets riled that I said “if they were missionaries”, it is only because I have seen people pose as others in order to implicate them in a crime etc. Whoever did this is going to have to answer to God. It certainly is not something that the LDS Church would encourage or tolerate. I do not care what anyone’s religion is; they should NEVER desecrate another’s place or items of worship.

 In the comments section of the Salt Lake Tribune article, a lot of people are saying “no big deal” and “they didn’t break the law.”

Disgusting.

The LDS church has identified them as missionaries serving at that time in that location. Besides, one of the missionaries already delivered a handwritten note of apology. So they certainly aren’t denying it.

As I said, nobody ahould ever desecrate the place or items of worship of another. Shame on them. I am LDS and I have met missionaries that really should never have gone on a mission…they were way to immature and really did not care about the church. Shame on these guys. There are many many missionaries out there that would NEVER do anything like this. You will find the “bad apples” in EVERY group, church etc.

Shame on those too who say “no big deal”

And were dumb enough to post photos.

Salt Lake Tribune apparently in denial. Look at title of the article: Mormon missionaries allegedly damage Colorado Catholic shrine

sltrib.com/ci_8513613?source=rss
The SL Trib always uses “alleged” until the accused have been tried and found, well, guilty, or innocent…ya know, the whole innocent until proven guilty ideal. I agree that it is the right way to go.

🙂

Yes - even if we KNOW someone is guilty, it is best to wait until it is handled that way until it is proven. This does protect the rights of the innocent, no matter how ridiculous it may seem at times…

Certainly, using “allegedly” in reference to the damage is appropriate (breaking the head off the statue of the saint). Although these missionaries will have to explain why the original photobucket description read "‘having broken off the head of a saint.’ That certainly looks like an admission of guilt.

However, it is certain that they desecrated the shrine and made a mockery of the Roman Catholic Church as demonstrated in their photos.

Personally, I don’t find the basic principles of freedom in the Bill of Rights to be ridiculous.

What I do find ridiculous are two boys vandalizing religious property and desecrating a religious shrine.

You are right. However, the newspaper opens itself up for trouble in this “sue happy” world if it outright says they did it. How many cases have there been where we know someone is guilty - it is OBVIOUS they are guilty - and until it is “proven” they continue to be referenced as “allegedly guilty”? Too many to count…

I agree. The SL Trib got into some legal trouble, years ago, for reporting criminal activity, where names were taken and published as the people doing the crime. As it turns out, the people the Trib named as perpetrating the crime were found innocent in court. They sued the Trib and won. Since then, the SL Trib always have “alleged” in there, as do the local news stations.

I do not find the basic principles of freedom in the Bill of Rights to be ridiculous. I never said I did. What I find ridiculous is the amount of time, money and grief that are spent on something where you know what the outcome will be. I also beleive that seemingly ridiculous at times, the system works (though there is a small percentage where it does not…that is another topic:o ). It is far from perfect, but the legal system we have is better than alot of places. There are way too many who abuse it though…(again - another thread for that…)

As a Catholic, I am much less concerned with the physical vandalism (breaking heads off saint statues) than I am with the mockery and desecration evident in the photos.

So get over the “allegedly”. They “allegedly damaged the shrine” SO WHAT?

But I can see their photos with MY OWN EYES THAT THEY ARE MOCKING MY CHURCH, MY BELIEFS, AND WHO I AM. I don’t NEED a court to CONVICT them of that before I can say that they did it.

Or SUE ME already.

I would bet that there isn’t a single Catholic out there who pickets Temple Square with Mormon garments on parade.

Says a lot. This is really sad.

You are right. However, you are not a national newspaper or organization that has to watch out for that kind of technicality when printing a story or making a stement.

I do not see that anyone in this discussion is really saying that they did not do it. The article states that they admitted to it so it looks like they did it…no argument there…no need to yell;)

Yes, this is sad.

What would a Catholic be doing with temple garments anyway? 😉

I hold nothing against the LDS Church for the actions done by these individuals.

I’m a resident of the San Luis Valley and am highly disappointed.

The irony is that the LDS is building a church in that town as we speak. I’ve heard comments from San Luis (town) residents along the lines of, “that church won’t stand here, we’re all catholic…” Sadly, these “townsfolk” are relying on their culture to stay catholic, meanwhile the JW and LDS is growing rather quickly in the area… Pray for our Valley, please!?

This is Our Lady’s Valley and the spanish settlers have worked hard in keeping our faith and the spanish culture alive. As a “white” catholic of the San Luis Valley who grew up in the midwest, I embrace the culture and wish the locals would more. But only in faith.

😉

This incident illustrates the point that Mormon missionaries are just kids, and kids do stupid things. Mormon missionaries should be given no credibility because they are just children parroting what they are told to say. It is like when a JW comes to your door with her 6 year-old child in tow and wants you to listen to the kid testify of his faith in the JWs. It’s ridiculous.
