Not sure where this should go…

We have Mormon missionaries coming over Friday evening, and I’m not sure what to expect. I’ve always wanted to have the opportunity to defend the Faith, but I’m afraid I’m going to blank out under the pressure.

We have hosted a set of girls once. They are lovely young people. One approached me at work and asked if I wanted them to come over and demonstrate “Family Night” for our family. It sounded fun so we did. At the end, my husband pulled out his guitar and we showed them some of our Mass music and shared some of our beliefs with them. Nobody was converted from either side. I always wonder if we planted any seeds. I don’t think the local Mormon church sends out missionaries to our town any more. Their stake has grown. They have out grown two buildings so far. I think we could take a lesson from them and do door to door evangelization. So many people out there need God.

hello,

my wife has been a mormon missionary and…we married and…we are Christians.

They are extremely polite young people, but it is not a question of defending your faith, there is nohing to defend with them, for me they are not Christians. They use the same therminology and names.

…maybe you could pass them a blog where there is a mormon conversion…

this has been the story of me and my wife, maybe it could make them at least doubt in their doctrine…

There are a few good resources here, at CA.

One of the first things they’ll tell you is that the Early Church fell into apostasy. A good tract for that claim is this:

catholic.com/documents/pillar-of-fire-pillar-of-truth

Bishop Hunt, who was the Bishop of the Salt Lake diocese wrote an apologetic document that addresses most of the Mormon claims that are relevant to Catholicism. It is online here.

Other than that, I would invite them to pray with you, you, leading the prayer.

If you want to be friends with a mormon, or have any chance of showing them the light in Catholicism, then talk to them about Catholicism, and ignore all the links that tell you what mormons “really believe.”

Realize that although your view of the Eucharist may seem strange to us (as it does to most Protestant sects as well!), that your description of your feelings of closeness to Christ, through your literal belief in Transubstantiation, will give pause to the more sincere LDS missionaries. At least it did to me, when I was a missionary, and I actually got very angry at my senior companion who made fun of it afterward.

As a people, we’re generally most touched by personal stories both of family, and of answered prayers, and a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

Don’t talk about the “mormon Jesus;” that’s profoundly insulting, and realize that any literature that you read that uses that phrase, is designed to insult mormons.

I hope you have a wonderful evening.

sounds like you need to study double-speak. They simply do not have the same meanings to words that we do.

Wow, amazing just amazing.

WE share common family values with the Mormons. But our theology is worlds apart. Start with what we have in common and then discuss the differences in theology. Let them tell you what they believe, Counter with what you believe. The truth will prevail.
