I would like the Catholic view on Mormon Patriarchal blessings of the LDS church.

Patriarchal blessings are basically an outline of a LDS person’s future and past. If they will go on a mission, if they will get married in the temple, and what tribe they came from.

My boyfriend is LDS and he said the biggest roadblock in the road of him even considering becoming Catholic is that his patriarchal blessing said he would be married in the temple.

What could I tell him that could change his mind or something? What the Catholic church views are on telling the future. Or something.

I have read a few of them, they all say around the same thing give or take. I just can’t believe that random people in the church can give these blessings off the top of their head with no prior knowledge of the person they are blessing.

Just can someone flat out give me their opinion, or hit me with some scripture of theology. I just would like some feedback.

it’s like a horoscope in many cases. you see what you want to see. if you believe it then it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy because you actively seek to follow it.

The patriarch says what he thinks he should say to each person. the catholic position is that this is no more significant than any other person’s prayer. It is NOT revelation. it is at best just a prayer for things to turn out that way. Since Mormonism is a false religion, God doesn’t want most of those things done anyway.

if your boyfriend doesn’t want to leave the LDS church then you are set for huge challenges in your future. you need to find out how comitted he is to the LDS church and how willing he is to objectively study both the LDs church and the Catholic church and make an informed choice about his beliefs.

That’s kind of a bizarre roadblock to be honest. It sounds to me like he’s probably using it as a convenient excuse to say something else that he has a hard time verbalizing.

The “prophecy” that one will be married in the temple is just boilerplate. There is a standard laundry list of stuff they say in every PB, and that is one of them.

Your boyfriend is using that as an excuse. Besides, if he believed in Catholicism enough to seriously consider joining, then he would realize that the Mormon patriarchs are not prophets or seers and cannot predict your future. He cannot believe in Mormonism and Catholicism at the same time because the two are diametrically opposed.

By the way, you should break this relationship off immediately. You are courting a lifetime of heartache by being unequally yoked to a non-Christian. You may as well take up with a Muslim. Wise up!

Agreed. This is a lame excuse.

I don’t know how common an occurrence this is, but my cousin and I received our PB the same day by the same Patriarch.

Now that neither of us are Mormons, we decided a few months ago to share our PBs (which are documented on paper).

They were identical.

Again, I have no clue if this is a common occurrence or if my cousin and I just had a rather lazy Patriarch. Either way it’s telling of the alleged “special nature” of the blessing.

I disagree.
Though it’s certainly possible to simultaneously and selectively practice certain facets of both faiths and even worship like a Catholic and a Mormon, it is indeed impossible to a member of both churches and be in good standing. Both organizations are absolutists.

Believe me there is nothing you can tell him that can cause a Mormon to 2nd think his patrarchal blessing. Maybe you should join the mormon’s get a patriarchal blessing and then prove him it’s rubbish. Course if the Mormons are right in the end you would be totally and completly SOL.

He does not believe in Catholicism at all, we have barely talked about religion. I have vaguely described basic Catholic theology but he has never claimed to even believe anything about my church. He has agreed to listen to my side, so it’s not a completely lost cause.

I am aware I have a tough task but I won’t break it off without trying. I’ve listened to his side, and he is giving me my chance at mine.

Yeah, I noticed similarities between my friend’s PB and my boyfriends. Did yours say you were going to get married in a temple? I just think that they probably all say that, and if you a boy it will probably say you are going to go on a mission.

I thought about this, if a Catholic priest told me when I was going to get married in a Catholic Church then I would probably think that was true, if we were taught that.

The mormon church has so many ways of controlling their members. Even to the point of telling them what their future is, it seems like it would be impossible to escape.

They are templates. Everyone is told they will marry in the temple, every woman is told they will have a family. This one sent a relative of mine into depression for years, because she was infertile, so she believed that God was withholding blessings from her. She always was wondering what she was doing wrong.

If your bf is a true, believing, honest to God mormon, and he were to marry you outside of a mormon temple, he will always believe that God is withholding something from him.

That hit me harder than any other reply on here. You’re right.
Which is why I could never marry him if he stayed Mormon.

That’s a possible interpretation of part of it, but based on the parts I’m referring to (and personal experiences that confirm them), I have no fear of a premature death, and I’ll take my own insights over those the “brethren” any day.
You know that Jesus Christ offers you much more.

And I accept.
You don’t get it. You aren’t getting anything out of either church because you don’t recognize them as churches- you recognize them as faiths that you can borrow from at will and construct your own monstrosity with. Your practice reveals that you believe your authority to be greater than prophet OR pope, hence you aren’t a true member of EITHER church, no matter how well you are able to deceive others- and mostly, yourself. Being a part of either church involves a recognition and submission to authority, not a free-for-all card to construct willy nilly whatever seems sexy to you.

Good luck man. I really wish you the best in figuring this out.

I don’t want to rain on someone’s parade but the Patriarchal Blessing is very personal to each mormon and these blessings are certainly not similiar. If that were the case, the blessing would have been exposed as a fraud a long time ago. Mormons are not stupid people.

But since the Patriarchal Blessing still exists and is shared by spouses and at times good friends, it can serve as a guidepost in how to live one’s life. And people do recognize differences in each others blessings. 🙂

The ones I’ve seen are very similar. Someone already on this thread said that theirs was exactly the same to someone else’s (the same patriarch being lazy). If you want to be delusional y ou can ignore that.
