Mormon Patriarchal Blessings

I don’t want to rain on someone’s parade but the Patriarchal Blessing is very personal to each mormon and these blessings are certainly not similiar. If that were the case, the blessing would have been exposed as a fraud a long time ago. Mormons are not stupid people.

But since the Patriarchal Blessing still exists and is shared by spouses and at times good friends, it can serve as a guidepost in how to live one’s life. And people do recognize differences in each others blessings. 🙂
whyme, they all contain the same thing. If the patriarch knows something personal about the person, he’ll throw something in that addresses that. It is no different than going to a fortune teller.

This doesn’t imply Mormons are stupid. They just believe and don’t question. And you know that every person is instructed to not share their patriarchal blessing with anyone else. Why do you think that is so? I think it is so people don’t notice that it’s like opening the morning astrology reading in the newspaper.

He does not believe in Catholicism at all, we have barely talked about religion. I have vaguely described basic Catholic theology but he has never claimed to even believe anything about my church. He has agreed to listen to my side, so it’s not a completely lost cause.

I am aware I have a tough task but I won’t break it off without trying. I’ve listened to his side, and he is giving me my chance at mine.
If he is a believing Mormon, he considers it his sacred duty to convert you and he (and his friends and family) will never stop trying. If he is a faithful Mormon he will never marry you unless you convert. If he is a less-than-faithful Mormon, then he has character issues and you should run and not look back.

If you are a faithful Catholic, you will never marry outside the faith.

I see that the two of you are at a hopeless impass. Save yourself a lifetime of heartache; get out while you can. I know whereof I speak.

God love you,
Paul

I am aware of how personal they are. I am not claiming they are all the same, but if you are Mormon it is not going to say you will not be married in the temple. That is what Mormons strive for.

They don’t need to be stupid, just gullable and obedient. For instance, Mormons don’t realize that the temple name given to them “by revelation” is the same name given to everyone who went through the temple that day. They don’t realize it because they are forbidden to reveal their secret names to one another, so they never find out.

I found out quite by accident.

It is the same with the PBs. So long as they don’t share them (except perhaps with a spouse), they will never see how similar and formulaic they all are.

You have both???

That makes no sense, when you are baptized as a mormon your other baptism is considered invalid.
Apparently not by all…I was baptized as an infant in the RCC and then as an adult in the Mormon church. When I wanted to return to the RCC, it did not bother my priest that I had been baptized LDS. It also does not bother my Mormon friends that I attend the RCC now.

Many Christian churches (that are not RCC) do not acknowledge infant baptism no matter which church it is. Some do…SOmeone could get baptized a hundred times, but it is the person’s heart at the time of baptism that counts. Baptism is NOT a “magic spell”; it is (and should be) a PART of the salvation issue…ok - a bit off track…

I do recognize them as churches, and I recognize and submit to their authority. I also try to make my monstrosities as orthodox as possible. I’ve already had a number of Catholics here and offline tell me that what I’m doing is fine by Rome. Furthermore, I don’t claim any higher authority. My actions are inspired by my own informed conscience, and I let Rome and Salt Lake worry about authority.
Yup, that last sentence is a problem. If you were truly members of either of those churches, you would recognize and respect their competing claims to authority. But you don’t and therefore you’re just goofing off.

Luckily for ALL of us, GOD will be the ultimate “authority” on everything we have done and not done in durring our life. Catholics think (some say “know”) they are “right” and Mormons think (some say “know”) they are right. GOD knows who and what is right and will judge us all accordingly.

True, and I doubt anyone really 100% gets it. We are finite minds trying to comprehend the infinite.

What I think is a bigger issue is that of attitude.

If the last sentence is the only thing wrong with it, then I am on the right track. What I meant was that while I recognize and respect their competing claims to authority, I also don’t worry about it too much, and try not to step on anybody’s toes while I do what I do.

Salt Lake has teaching authority over Mormonism, and Rome has teaching authority over Catholicism, while I don’t claim either, but try to learn from both.
Who has authority to do valid baptisms?

Difficult to say. I have not read everyone’s blessing. I only know what I know. Mormons value these blessings and if word got around that all are the same, no one would value them. In each blessing there are differences. And many mormons find great comfort in their blessing. It is as if a person has received a letter from god since the mormon patriarch acts as god’s representative when he gives the blessing.

I think that most mormons know that the name that they receive when they enter the temple for the first time is the name that has been given to everyone on that day depending on whether the person is a man or a woman. If a person forgets their name, by recalling the day and the year, salt lake can find the name and pass it on to the person who forgot. It is that simple.

The ones I’ve seen are very similar. Someone already on this thread said that theirs was exactly the same to someone else’s (the same patriarch being lazy). If you want to be delusional y ou can ignore that.
Just because someone said it does not make it true. As I have said, Patriarchal Blessings are shared by good friends and spouses. If they were the same, it would have been exposed as a fraud. Obviously they are different but the outline does sound similiar in terms of what is said in the beginning.

Let me put it this way. The Patriarch is just a man in a suit who gives a blessing. IAnd a Patriarch’s life is not an easy life. He gives many blessings a year and receives no compensation in return. In fact, it is just one of many callings in the lds church. If it were as you claimed, most patriarchs would have left the lds church since they would know that their blessings are nothing but a fraud on innocent people.

As I said, being a patriarch is not easy and it can be a life calling. See my point?

Here is one Patriarchal Blessing I nabbed from an antimormon site:

Brother *********, by the authority of the Holy Melchizedek Priesthood, and through my calling as a Patriarch, I lay my hands upon your head to give you a blessing. This pattern is set by the Lord. I acknowledge our Father in heaven, and I express our love, and gratitude, unto him for the blessings he gives his children on earth. We ask for his continued help in all things in life.

Brother *********, you were one of the noble sons, of the premortal world, there in that holy sphere, through your faithfulness, grew and developed, and chose the plan of salvation to be your guide. You were choosen through your obedience to come to earth at this appointed time.

Your mortal existance is a necessary step in your eternal progression. You will be blessed to use the talents, that the Lord has given you, to serve your fellow men.

Your mission in life is to help build the kingdom of God on earth. You will be blessed as you strive to bring the mortal into harmony with the spiritual in your sojourn in life.

You have been given a mortal body by worthy parents, who have shown you the ways of truth, and righteousness. They have shown their love by guiding you in the ways of the Lord, and are preparing you for your future life. Their love for you is eternal.

The covenants that they have made, and living the Lord’s commandments, is a example for you to follow. I bless you to show your love and honor to them by living, as the Lord has commanded.

You are blessed to be of the blood of Israel, and are of the lineage of Ephraim, the great prophet of old, the son of Joseph; to whom the blessing of the Priesthood were given. The covenants, the blessings, and the promises given through the Holy Priest*hood, of former ages, are available to you through your membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. You are blessed to be one of the children of the covenant. You have been given the Priesthood, and the gospel, in it’s fullness, in your life.

I bless you to search for the truths that have been given through the restored gospel. Seek the companionship of the Holy spirit, that the truths of the gospel can be made known to you; that all truth, where ever it is found, may be available to you through your desire to learn the truth. Listen to the prophet; and to the Priesthood leaders, that the Lord has placed upon the earth. Follow their council and make it part of your life.

I bless you to make study and prayer a daily activity; that the light of the gospel can be evident in your life. You will be blessed to control your thought and shut out the unwanted, and unholy, with the ability to replace them with virtuous thoughts. You will then be prepared to choose the right, when choices are placed before you; that the adversary will have no power over you. Prepare yourself with the knowledge of the gospel, and at the appropriate and appointed time the priviledge will be yours to use that knowledge to take the light of the gospel to the Lord’s children who have not yet heard of the restored gospel.

You will have the joy, and satisfaction, that comes from service, to the Lord, in the mission field. Through your efforts many will be brought to the knowledge of the truth.

Remember the law of obedience, and you will receive the blessings that come from living this law; and find you can resist temptation.

You will have the opportunity of functioning as a father, and the blessings given through family life will be yours.

The blessings, that are found in the house of the Lord, will be given you. Keep your*self temple worthy, and when this opportunity comes, you can go to the temple and there receive the knowledge of that sacred place. At the appointed time, with a companion of your choice, you’ll be able to be sealed by the Holy Priesthood, for time and all eternity, and receive the blessings of an eternal family unit. You’ll want to return often to do the work that is found there in.

Your experiences in life brings challenges, and disappointments; you will be blessed to exercise your faith, and call upon the Lord, to find answers to your prayers. As you seek the light of the gospel, the gift of knowledge, and understanding, will be yours.

You will receive through your efforts the gift of faith, and testimony. Remember the gift of forgiveness, and the principle of repentance. Use these principles in your life as necessary to ensure your eternal goals.

The Lord will bless you with sufficient of the bounties of life that he has prepared for his children on earth.

I bless you with the blessings of the Holy resurrection, and with the power to come forth in the morning of the first resurrection, and there receive the glories of that wondrous time.

These blessings are yours, according to your faithfulness, and I pronounce them upon you through my calling as a patriarch, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

What is so bad about this kind of blessing? 🙂

Nebula, Tsuzuki’s religion on his profile says “Mormon-rite Catholic occultist” Whatever that means! I think the Occult is condemned by Mormonism AND Catholicism. Tsuzuki looks like a very, very confused individual.

Except that Patriarchs believe that their callings are true and legit. If a Bishop calls you to be a Patriarch you are not going to doubt it, you can convince yourself of anything if you “pray for it to be true”. Also, the more you give those kind of blessings the better at them you will be. If you believe A. That you are a priest and B. That God called you to be a Patriarch. When you give those blessings you are not going to doubt yourself.

And if I am correct, no church leaders and those who have callings receive compensation, so saying that a Patriarch does not recieve it makes no difference.
