I may be wrong, but my guess is that Tsuzuki si a young person who is sincere enough but enjoys the attention and hence makes choices that are edgy (such as choosing to put the word ‘lucifer’ in his signature) but that are defensible in his mind. There is maturity yet to be had and I wish him all the luck in sorting that out.

Haven’t read the entire thread–I will, I promise, but noticed this and it started me wondering, since I heard that they used to be paid for the “blessings”. So, when did they stop that practice?

I thought about this, if a Catholic priest told me when I was going to get married in a Catholic Church then I would probably think that was true, if we were taught that.

The mormon church has so many ways of controlling their members. Even to the point of telling them what their future is, it seems like it would be impossible to escape.

  1. Mission Call
  2. Temple Marriage
  3. Big family
Of course these three were not only vague but conditional. I had to remain a faithful LDS for them to come to pass. Now that I haven’t served a mission and obviously will not marry in the temple, an LDS apologist can simply point out that this isn’t due to fault by the patriarch but my fault of losing the faith.

Patriarchal Blessings are really nothing more than self fulfilling prophecies. Not unlike horoscopes and tarot cards.

But since the Patriarchal Blessing still exists and is shared by spouses and at times good friends, it can serve as a guidepost in how to live one’s life. And people do recognize differences in each others blessings. 🙂

That is without a doubt the most stupid defense of LDS doctrine I’ve ever heard.

“Because all Mormons are not stupid, and PBs are still in existence, they must be true.”

Tell me then why do psychics still have a steady stream of people coming to them, why do the daily horoscopes still have readers, and why do people play the Ouija board unless of course all of these are genuine, truth-seeking articles?

Do you not see the gaping hole in this kind of logic?

Turn of the 20th centure if I remember correctly. The patriarchs used to be a travelling show, so I’m not sure if they were necessarily compensated for their WORK as a patriarch or merely for their travel.

I’ll see if I can find any info about it.

It sounds surprisingly similar to a palm reading I had many years ago at our local fair. The “psychic” told me I had good parents, and that I was blessed to come from good lineage. She said I was a good person who would get married, have a big family, and do many great things for God and the world. My then fiance was having his palm read by another “psychic” and afterwords we compared what we were told. Turns out our palms said EXACTLY the same thing! :rolleyes:
 
I think we should all put Tsuzuki on “ignore,” both Catholics and Mormons alike. He is a master at derailing threads - like this one.

Back to the OP:

It seems as if this blessing is some kind of prophecy.

Perhaps you can show your BF how many of the rulings of the Mormon prophets have been subsequently changed by newer prophets. For example, polygamy, and people of color not being eligible for the priesthood. Both used to be dogma, but the dogma has changed. Both dogmas changed with suspicious timing: the first just in time to keep Utah from being left out of US statehood; the second just in time to keep their tax-exempt status from being removed. That means that either the original prophets were wrong (and God doesn’t like false prophets), or that dogma changed because of outside pressure.

And Catholic dogma doesn’t change. Hasn’t changed. Won’t change. And we’ve had 2000 years of pressure and/or persecution.

Since a ‘patriarch’ has a calling for life, no one in their right mind would remain one if they believe it all to be blarney. And according to many of the catholic posters here, the blessing is blarney and lame. Plus, the blessing are all alike, so goes the theory on this thread. But a patriarch does feel that they have a calling from god. And that makes all the difference when they give a patriarchal blessing. No patriarch would remain one for long without that feeling that it all comes from god.

No one is paid for the blessings. Being a patriarch is a calling in the lds church and generally it is a calling for life. No room for ‘blarney’ in that calling.

Here is the catholic theory on this thread: PB’s are all the same, there is no difference in the blessings. They are kept secret so no one knows each others blessing. Hence, they are false.

Mormon theory: No blessing is the same but all can follow a similiar outline. Patriarchs receive a calling and believe in their calling. If catholics are right, no patriarch would remain in their calling for long since it is a calling for life and take much dedication.

Hey! I know that they aren’t paid–now. But my question was when they stopped being paid (it was my understanding that they used to be–and I was even told here that such was the case in the past.

You got the truth on that, they did used to get paid. It was customary to bring a monetary gift when going to get the patriarchal blessing. I wish I knew exactly when that practice was discontinued but I don’t.

It was a long time ago, but I recall being told to bring an offering or a payment. Pretty sure, but I could be mistaken after 32 years. :o Interestingly enough, my Stake Patriarch had only one hand, so the blessing read “I lay my hand upon your head to seal you with a blessing…”.
