Gordon B. Hinckley was a good guy. He gave good talks in mormon general conferences. He believed what he believed to be the word of god and live it and in the end, that is all we can all do: live what we think is the word of god.

I thought as Prophet he KNEW what to believe since he got it straight from [g]od vis-a-vis the Holy Spirit.

Is THIS mormon belief? “What we think”???

How does one get on the list? This aspect is interesting to me. I know how a new pope is chosen. I know how a new president is chosen. I don’t know how this works

It’s my understanding that, according to LDS tradition, the longest serving apostle from the Quorum of the Twelve is selected within days of the death of the president. Thomas Monson would be the next in line, then.

How does one get on the Council of Twelve? If it goes strictly by age or time of service, what prevents someone with dementia from moving up?

Is it longest tenure in the Quorum (from the date they joined the quorum), the longest service within the church (from the date they were baptized) or the oldest member (from their date of birth of course).

The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles elects the new President. However, by tradition the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have always become the new President of the Church. The president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles rises to that position by seniority. The longest serving member of the Quorum of the Twelve always becomes the president of the Quorum. So you could say that as a rule, and by tradition, the senior Apostle always become the new President of the Church. It has been said that if by chance the Lord wanted someone other that the senior Apostle to become the new President, He would reveal it to the president of the Quorum of the Twelve.

The Church is governed by three governing bodies, or councils, or quorums, each of which has the right of presidency over the whole Church in the absence of the higher ones. They are the First Presidency, the Twelve Apostles, and the Seventy. When the President of the Church dies, the Quorum of the First Presidency is automatically dissolved, and no longer exists in the Church. At that point the Twelve Apostles become the dominant governing body of the Church; and the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles becomes the de facto President of the Church. When the First Presidency is reorganized, that de facto position is recognized as rightful successor, and is duly appointed as such.

None of them have got dementia yet! The Lord blesses them with good health and a sound mind.

It is well known that during the last years of his presidency, Ezra Taft Benson was completely senile. He just sat there and drooled. Gordon B. Hinckley, then Taft’s 1st counselor, was de facto president for years prior to becoming president himself.

If an apostle, prior to becoming president, evinces any debilitating health problem (including dementia), he can be moved to emeritus status and another apostle will be chosen to replace him. This is apparently not an option for the president of the church.

I’ve seen members of the Seventy moved to emeritus status. I don’t ever remember an apostle being moved to emeritus status. I would guess that would not happen.

I would suppose that if the senior apostle were completely incapacitated the next senior apostle would get the nod, but that has never happened. Benson was in o.k. shape when he first became president.

Benson was “in o.k. shape” to the end of his days. He became physically very weak towards the end of his life, but his mind never stopped functioning right to the end. His ability to counsel the Church in matters of importance never diminished.
