Mormon Question

Honestly, I don’t think Jesus actually plays all that big a role in Mormon worship.

A couple of nights ago I was browsing around You Tube. I found a video clip of the TV talk host Glenn Beck giving his Mormon testimony. Here is a link to the video:

I listened to almost the entire clip, right up to the point where he said that soon after he got Mormon baptized he got a better media job, and that this proved that “someone is watching out for him” or words to that effect. What was notably absent from Beck’s testimony, as near as I could tell, was the name of Jesus. At that point I turned it off, disgusted. I’ve never been a fan of Glenn Beck. Now I know why.

Also, I’ve been to Mormon church a handful of times. At those times, there just isn’t much Jesus being talked about. It is all about Heavenly Father, Joseph Smith, Rev Hinckley, Book of Mormon, etc. About the closest they come to actually saying “Jesus” is mentioning the “Atonement of Christ” and that is rare.

I strongly believe that this is significant. I believe that a Church of Jesus Christ should be talking about Jesus Christ from the beginning to the end. That’s one thing I love about the Catholic Church, and the Mass… it is all Jesus, all the time.

You’re right–this is significant. I’ve been to LDS sacrament meetings many times over the years and I’ve noticed the same thing. Mormon worship isn’t centered around Christ at all. The emphasis is definitely on the BoM, Joseph Smith, the current prophet, etc, but not on Christ. Contrast that with the mass which is Christ-centered from beginning to end.

I’ve said before that LDS worship seems more focussed on the church itself rather than on God. When you listen to the talks it’s always more about how much they love the church, how much they know it’s true, how much they love the “prophet,” etc. They don’t see it but at sacrament meeting it seems more like they’re worshipping their church than they are worshipping God.

I guess it will take more than smply changing the font size of ‘Jesus Christ’ in their church’s name to convince the rest of the world that Mormonism is really Christ-centered.

How do you reconcile your belief in plural gods (polythesim) with Biblical versus like the following?

*“You are my witness, says the Lord, and my witnesses, I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am He. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I am the Lord, and besides me there is no saviour.”
*Isaiah 43:10-11

“I am the first and I am the last beside me there is no God”.
Isaiah 44:6

“Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock: I know not any.”
Isaiah 44:8

“I am the Lord, and there is no other besides me there is no God; I gird you, that men may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the Lord , and there is no other.”
Isaiah 45:5-6

And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Saviour; there is none besides me.
Isaiah 45:20

Let me save you the trouble. I have asked Mormons the same question. The answer is that they interpret any verse that says there is only one God to mean only one God for this world. You see, by adding ‘for this world’, they open up the possibility that there are other gods for other worlds, and also the possibility that they could become one themselves in eternity.

The LDS use the same method to dismiss the Christian concept of the trinity. Wherever scripture says that God the Father and Jesus are one, they interpret that to mean one in purpose. Again by adding a few simple words that are not there (in purpose), Mormons completely change the meaning of scripture as understood by Christians since the very beginning.
