Back in 2008 the Mormon (LDS) Church announced it was going to build one of their temples in Rome. It was the subject of this now closed thread on this forum. Today (October 23, 2010) construction begins, their Prophet will be in town to break ground on the new building. I am a Catholic, but excited to see this happen, their temples are beautiful buildings, and I am tolerant of other Christian religions. Plus apparently it will be clear across Rome from the Vatican so we don’t need to worry about that!

thanks for the link. 15 acres seems like a big site, I’ll be curious to see what they do with it.

**Christians don’t build temples. We are the temple that Christ builds. **

Christians building temples is a 100% revolution in Christian theology, and therefore not Christian theology. It lends itself to a salvation by works mentality, which reminds me of another supposedly Christian-esque, or Christian-safe (say they, at least) sect : the Freemasons, who likewise are temple builders.

Be weary of wolves’ in sheeps clothing : There is only one True Church, and there’s absolutely zero gurantee that any other “church” will be “good.”

Tim

The one thing I find curious is that, according to a friend of mine in UT, many of the temples that are well out of the Mormon corridor really are under utilized. Opened only a few hours a week.

Not sure of the LDS membership in the Italy area, and of that, activity rates.

But I always appreciated being able to leave the hustle and bustle of life and go to the temple. If you have the time being able to sit and meditate in the Celestial room was nice. 🙂

The “celestial” room ? Do Mormons have the slightest idea how much theology Mr. Smith borrowed from his Masonry ?

Tim

In 2008 Italy had 22k members.
I wonder how many LDS tourists visit Rome each year

Dont know much about what Mormons know or don’t know about LDS history now, but back when I was LDS they were aware he was a Mason. How much they knew about what exactly Masonry was, I dont know. I know I didn’t know the specifics.

Back then the internet was not available.

As much as I admire your tolerance, I truly do, I must simply state that the Holy Mother Church does not view the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as a fellow Christian religion. Holy Mother Church considers only those faiths which can state the Creed without alteration, and with all sincerity, as Christian. As the LDS Church cannot do so, they do not belong to the christian faith.
If you disagree with this, and please no offense intended, I would suggest doing a little research into what the LDS church actually believes. I have no issue with Mormon’s on a personal or moral level. My best friend growing up is and was a Mormon, his family was always open and warm despite the vast differences between our theological views. That said, their beliefs go directly against the central tenant of the Judao-Christian faith family, that God is the One and ONLY God.

So as far as the building of one of their very beautiful temples in Rome, while I believe in tolerance, I personally find it rather depressing to see the city that has served as the center of the Catholic world for over two millenia, is so secularized as to have room or enough interested people to justify the building of a LDS Temple there.

Pax et Bonum,
Tom

I find this statement quite disturbing. You should not be tolerant with Pagan religions nor condone it’s movements or growth.

Catholick345,
Thanks for posting this. I hadn’t paid attention that the groundbreaking ceremony is this weekend for that new temple.

I’m hoping perhaps some Catholic leader from the Vatican may decide it will be a good idea to visit the temple open house when that time comes after the temple is built, and may become a bit more knowledgeable about LDS beliefs so as to not be so “afraid” of the Mormons’ worship of the living Christ, the Son of the living God and the One Savior of the world for all mankind. Becoming more knowledgeable about such things is a good idea.

I’m sure they are very knowledgeable about the LDS religion and I don’t believe they are afraid of it at all. They don’t consider the LDS church as Christian for the reasons posted above. * I would be surprised if Holy Father would visit the Open House but then you never know…if his visit appears to sanction it I doub it.*

“afraid”, more implications??

Stormy99,
I didn’t mean the Holy Father, although I’m sure he would be welcomed. I meant some of the other leaders who may have occasion to meet with him from time to time. (Maybe they’d tell him something about their visit.)

Zaffiroborant,

People are often “afraid” of people they don’t understand or whose beliefs they don’t understand. They may label them and do other things to marginalize them, but what it really shows is that they have a deep-down sense of fear that comes from mistrust, and ultimately that means if they could move past their mistrust and find out more about them, then they could have less inclination to marginalize and more inclination, as Catholick345 showed in the OP, to be tolerant and non-judgmental.

I’ve never had a sense that Catholics or the Vatican “fear” Mormons or their theology. I sense more of an indifference at “another” protestant church that is a bit more on the fringe.

It’s the Southern type Evangelicals that have a real strong opposition more so than Catholics

I think this is the kind of thing Steve was referring to when he commented on the content of many of your posts.

I agree with you. today, it seems that people believe that it doesnt what one believes. this is very dangerous. it undermines the Work of Christ and His Church. it is the Will of God that all men come into His Church and not go to a false religion. this temple is a direct afront to the CC and will deceive many.

this freedom of religion thing will hurt many people who will not know the Truth.

In Brasil for example. this so called church Universal is building a temple made of stone brougth from Israel so they say, and this temple is supposed to be better than the Vatican. this group is taking a lot of Catholics away from the Church and what is most sad is that the bishops are doing nothing about it. relativism has permeated the minds of Catholic leaders and they have not made much effort to protect the people. this is contrary to what God wills.

it should be no tolerance to what is false. dont take this personal. the same happens to the CC, they marginalize the Church because they dont take the time to know the Church, therefore they go around building their own religion to keep people away from that which is Truth.

Thank you. I am sure it will help bring the Catholic and LDS churches closer together and increase mutual understanding.
