My husband’s Mormon friend asked him, yesterday, if he would be his sponsor into the Church. A question he posed to my husband is regarding his marriage. He and his wife are Mormon, though they are civilly divorced, they still live as husband and wife. He is sure that, eventually, his wife will follow him. What is the status of their marriage in the eyes of the Church? A little back story, a few years ago they lost their daughter in a car accident. The trauma tore their marriage apart but they always continued to live together. The Catholic church buried their daughter, brought them meals, and consoled them. Their temple wouldn’t do any of it because their daughter had a child out of wedlock. Since then, he and his wife attend Christmas and Easter Mass. They no longer attend LDS services. This year he is finally feeling called to Rome. He has witnessed my husband’s conversion, so he asked him for sponsorship. But he’s asked questions which we are not certain of the answers. How would his Mormon marriage and civil divorce effect his standing in the Church? Would he have a convalidation or would they have to have a new wedding? At this point, his wife doesn’t know he’s considering. They both love the reverence of the Mass and he is feeling called. Thanks be to God!
