I have a non-Catholic Christian friend who went to a Mormon church once. She wore jeans and a cross. Oops
I was the best man at my friends wedding (he is a jack mormon) and wore my crucifix. And wow, I must have been the devil to them!!!

LDS Members, what do you think? My sister seems to think it’s sacrilege more in the sense that they’re making a political statement at church… I remember reading about a feminist movement in the LDS Church back in the 80’s years ago- do you think this is just a continuation of that?

Just curious as to people’s opinions… I personally can’t see WHY this is such a big deal, but it is.
I am not LDS, but if it were me…I would be protesting that I can’t get to heaven unless my husband calls me out of the grave.
Wearing pants would come in waaaay after that.

I remember the days as a teen, we had to wear a dress/skirt in the middle of week just to sit in a classroom, while the boys our age were in jeans and t-shirts playing basketball just across the hall. All our lessons were about being “worthy” to marry one of those “priesthood” holders bouncing a ball across the hall.

Yes, it was a very enticing environment for a young woman. (Not.)

We tried to convince the adult leaders that we should be able to wear pants, because we were just sitting there, in a classroom. Why should we have to wear a dress? The boys weren’t in a business suit.

Deaf ears then. Deaf ears now.

I suspect the women will back out before Sunday.

Oh dear, their temple folk must be thinking what is happening in the world, what next? I actually feel some solidarity with these women. 😃

I suppose it’s no different to my ‘bubu’ who would not be caught dead without her mantilla at Mass. If her great/granddaughters attend Mass with her, we all have to wear a headscarf. She’s old school, not anti-Vatican II. People get set in their ways.

It’s important to note that not everyone can afford decent, clean clothes to wear to Mass. Some may even turn up unwashed or in rags, don’t judge them. Revealing clothing is another matter altogether.

The best item to wear is humility.

Fundies had a similar rule. The whole “dressing as a man” thing.
Guys, hold up a pair of your wife’s slacks…I mean seriously, is there ANYTHING about them that looks remotely masculine?

There are a few people that come to my congregation in jeans sometimes. I also wear a crucifix at all times, have 2 tattoos, and…am the Elders Quorum President….

There exists a group of Catholics who believe women should not wear pants, non?
I’ve commented on a few of those threads, talking about how women should be clad in “Marian” dress?

Here is one of many: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=193137

Man, I hope the Mormon women wear their pants to church that day!!!
One small step in clothing, one giant step for womankind!
Yes there are. These Catholics think women should dress like they live in first century Palestine. They have even more stringent criteria than the Vatican itself.

Wearing dresses is a western idea of how a women should dress. Since the Catholic Church is world wide with respects to all her cultures, a dress code (if there is one) will depend on geographical location

On a side note: I wish more girls were pants than short skirts  at my church. I mean really? Why am I seeing a teenager girl wear something she cannot even genuflect in or a boy wearing clothing so loose, he has to hold them up as they go for communion.

Hopefully our Lord will forgive me for being judgmental on dress.
Of course there are Catholics here who think all women should dress like the Virgin Mary, which is like first century Palestine.

Personally I like the salwar kameez. I remember wearing one as a child.

I don’t think it is a big deal. I doubt the vast majority of Latter-day Saints in the world are even aware of this. I certainly didn’t become aware of it until I saw it on an internet forum.

If women want to wear pants to church, sure. I’ve been in wards in California, New York, Arizona, DC, England, Spain, and the Dominican Republic. I’ve seen women wear nice pants to church in all of those places. This seems to be a Utah issue, which is a non-issue for the rest of us. What is really important is that we come to church to worship God, remember Christ’s atoning sacrifice, renew our covenants, and study the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

But you aren’t wearing jeans, and I doubt you got those tattoos after your conversion to Mormonism. So yours are forgiven because they are from your previous, uninformed, life. The Holy Ghost can still get through your tattoos. You are special.

“…when individuals follow the body-defiling practices of multiple piercing and tattooing, they dull their spiritual sensitivity. Tattooing the body seems analogous to spraying graffiti on one of our beautiful temples.” (from here)

A co-worker of mine strategically grew a beard, periodically, just so he wouldn’t be called as a bishop. It worked. He said he wanted to be viewed as rebellious, but not too rebellious as to have the stake pres. calling him into his office.

As for dress code, I love how Mormons dissemble their own leader’s teachings.

"When you are well groomed and modestly dressed, you invite the companionship of the Spirit and you can be a good influence on others. " (from here)

Have they changed their teaching on the wearing of a cross as well?
Do you openly wear it or is it hidden underneath your shirt?
I am quite certain your tattoos are hidden by clothes…😉

Many who join the [Mormon] Church who come from a Catholic or Protestant background while trying their utmost to live the gospel, and rid themselves of past, unconsciously bring some of the customs of their former environment with them. One of these is the wearing of the crucifix on a necklace, bracelet, or in some other form. The teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seem to indicate that this is improper because we do not hold any special reverence for the cross as such, nor do we have crosses in our chapels or homes or wear a crucifix as jewelry." LDS “Prophet” Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, Vol. 4, p. 16.

“To many [Mormons]…such a custom is repugnant and contrary to the true worship of our Redeemer. Why should we bow down before a cross or use it as a symbol? Because our Savior died on the cross, the wearing of crosses is to most Latter-day Saints in very poor taste and inconsistent to our worship. Of all the ways ever invented for taking life and the execution of individuals, among the most cruel is likely the cross. This was a favorite method among the Romans who excelled in torture. We may be definitely sure that if our Lord had been killed with a dagger or with a sword, it would have been very strange indeed if religious people of this day would have graced such a weapon by wearing it and adoring it because it was by such a means that our Lord was put to death.” LDS “Prophet” Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, Vol. 4, pp. 17-18.

I know of a teenage boy who purposely does not wear a white shirt on Sundays so that he can get out of, I believe, sacrament.

I am noticing a lot more facial hair on Mormon men around town - I just figured they were trying to show a “hipper” style to appeal to more people.

I wasn’t aware of this either, until I went, with my wife, to my grandmothers funeral. My wife was wearing a very nice and conservative pant suit and we were made to leave and have her change clothes. Then we were allowed to attend. We were late in returning to the funeral and what is worse, I was a pallbearer.

why is this even a big deal? I have seen Catholics come to Mass in jeans, shorts, tshirts, and flip flops.

LDS Members, what do you think?
shrug

I’ve heard some of my fellow LDS are denouncing this, but I have to admit I don’t really care one way or the other. It is true that LDS church is one of the few remaining that emphasizes “Sunday Best” as a way of expressing reverence for the Sabbath. That said, other than my wife, I honestly don’t look at what women wear at church.

I do know there are some LDS folks, oh, let’s call them “cultural Mormons”. They don’t really have much of a testimony of the truth claims of the LDS church, it’s scriptures, it’s prophet, the BoM, etc. They join or remain members for various cultural reasons. You may or may not have something similar in Catholicism, I don’t know. They occasionally make their presence known with stuff like this, or they demand the priesthood for women, or figure the church should get more involved in politics, or less involved, or change it’s answer, or what have you. It seems to me that the only good reason to be a Mormon, is you believe God wants you to be one, and therefore you believe the truth claims.
