This issue has bugged me for the longest time, how can the LDS say there is such a thing as a “literal spirit-child” given that a literal child is produced through human physical relations.
The idea of conceiving a a spirit and giving birth to a spirit dont make sense.

In Catholic belief, God is our creator, but we become the children of God through our relationship with Christ. We are not the actual offspring of God, but through the Church we call ourselves his “children.”

Mormons on the other hand believe that we have a Heavenly Father and Mother who through unknown means procreate and bear spirit children. But God does not “create,” like Catholics believe. Rather, Heavenly Father “organizes” and designs matter that is eternally existence. (Mormons also believe that spirits are not immaterial - they are actually a more refined type of matter) Our spirits, therefore, are not created, but conceived, in very much the same way as our bodies are conceived by mortal parents.

Before we are born and become mortals, we were spiritually born. At the beginning of mortal existence, the spirit and the body become enjoined. Upon death the spirit will leave the body again until the time of resurrection when the body and spirit will become inseparable.

All that aside, if God created us wouldn’t that make us his children? and he our father? Isn’t it a very old church tradition (maybe not catholic church) but to refer to God as our Father, us his children and each other as Brother ??? or Sister ???.

Yes, that is Catholic Tradition as well.

God bless,

Then what would our relationship to Jesus Christ be?
He is the Son of the Father.
We are the sons and daughters of the Father?
God the “Father” and God the “Son” are not literal terms but figurative so that us humans can get an idea of the Trinity. To humans a “father” is the literal parent that produces offspring through relations. For God the title of “Father” and “Son” is much more profound, beyond our comprehension. We are creation, God is creator.

Then what would our relationship to Jesus Christ be?
He is the Son of the Father.
We are the sons and daughters of the Father?
We are creatures, created out of love by The Father through The Son. Jesus’ sacrifice made it possible for us to become members of God’s family through adoption. We call one another “brother” and “sister” in anticipation of that adoption.
Romans 8:15
For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, " Abba! Father!
Romans 8:23
And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.
Romans 9:4
who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises,
Galatians 4:5
so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Ephesians 1:5
He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,
Ephesians 2:19
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household,
If we started out as “strangers and aliens”, and we need to be “adopted” to become a part of the family of God, then we could not have started out as the Father’s literal children. We are currently creatures, plain and simple.

Our relationship to Jesus is multi-faceted. He is our God and our Savior. But if we are admitted to heaven, we will become more than that - as members of God’s household (family) we will truly be children of the Father and brothers and sisters to Jesus. That is what the Father has been doing through all of salvation history - building His family.

That is what scripture tells us, and that is what the Catholic Church tells us.

God love you,
Paul

I believe logic says we are much more than “creatures”. God loves us like a Father even when we are not doing his will. When Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden God instructed them on how to survive in the world, he created clothing for them. We are the only creation made is his express likeness and image. He sent Christ to suffer and die for us even when we were in rebellion against him. I think we are his children whether we repent or not. I think it breaks his heart when we live in sin and makes him proud when we return to him. When we convert we are adopted into the house of Israel, God’s chosen people. But even before that we are his children. We are the “offspring” of diety.

The idea of conceiving a a spirit and giving birth to a spirit dont make sense.

**Ths is one of the fantasies taught by the Mormonoid Mutants from Kolob.

The entity they call “God the Father” lives on the planet Kolob with his one or more goddess wives (collectively called “heavenly mother”). They have physical bodies that are appropriately gender specific and spend eternity doing THAT* and having spirit babies who wait in their pre-incarnation or heretofore for physical bodies to be formed on earth.**

From www.lightplanet.com

by W. John Walsh

Elder Bruce R. McConkie taught:
Code:
Kolob means "the first creation." It is the name of the planet "nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God." It is "first in government, the last pertaining to the measurement of time. . . . One day in Kolob is equal to a thousand years according to the measurement of this earth." (Book of Abraham, pp. 34-35; Abra. 3:3-9.) ( Mormon Doctrine, p.428)
Please note that Kolob is the nearest planet to the residence of God, not the residence itself.

A well know mormon Hymn also teaches about Kolob (in the Mormon church, Hymns are also considered scripture). “If You Could Hie to Kolob” asks questions about the eternities and reminds those who sing the hymn of the eternal nature of God.

In Utah, Kolob National Park has been named after the scriptural location - perhaps because of the great beauty of the area within Kolob National Park.

Not sure if this correct but you can also search www.fairlds.org for more answers.

I made no reference to HOW our spirits were created, only that they were created by God. I’m guessing you agree with that. If the facts are that God created our spirits, then we are his children and he is our Father. Hopefully I don’t have to go into any details about why this is so as I’m sure you understand the relationship between a Father and his children.

What you think or feel is not relevant. Your disagreement is not with us but with the bible. The passages I quoted make it clear that we are invited to become children of God. But we start out as creatures.

Paul

Jesus told his followers that they are no longer slaves, he calls them friends. We also understand God as Father because of Jesus teaching it, as well as Jesus as Son because of Jesus teaching it. The concept of the Fatherhood of God was not common in Judeism back then. That does not mean it did not exist, but God was not “daddy” as Jesus taught. We were created in the image and likeness of God, and that makes us special in creation.

False (as usual):

Acts 17:

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

I am not too sure about that:

***Ye are the children of the Lord your God, (Deut. 14:1).

Ye are gods and all of you are children of the Most High, (Ps. 82:6).

Ye are the sons of the living God, (Hosea 1:10).

Have we not all one Father? Hath not one God created us? (Mal. 2:10).***

Perhaps I should have said that addressing God in the informal personal of Father was not common. Abba means daddy, afterall.

Show me both of those points in the bible. Where are we called “creatures”? What I see evidenced is a God that loves us as his children in both our sinful state and after repentance.
Romans 5: 8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Why would God send his only son to die for mere “creatures”?

Yes, I suppose you could be right about that. However, when Jesus applied the title Father to God among the Jews, He seemed to do so in a context implying that it should have been an obvious concept to them; and nobody seemed to be questioning Him on that. On the contrary, their responses seemed to affirm that assumption. For example, on one occasion when He was having a bit of an altercation with them, they affirmed to Him that God was their Father:

John 8:

41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

Paul was not advocating “offspring” in the matter of sexual reproduction but rather “in him we live and move and have our being”, and, God “gives all men life and breath” which is not the same as “of one blood [Adam and Eve] made all nations of men”. Paul was standing among polytheists, the last thing he would have been trying to teach was many gods or goddess wives.
23For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. 24"The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. 25And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. 26From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. 27God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. 28’For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’
29"Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by man’s design and skill. 30In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

Yes, God sent His Son to die for something infinitely less than Himself.

But look what Jesus says:
42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. 43Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.Obviously this wasnt literally “fatherhood” as in regards to sexual reproduction…otherwise Jesus is saying these Pharisees are** the literal children** of the Devil!

My post was not in response to your OP, and had no relevance to it.
