I do wonder if the Mormon belief in literally becoming, in substance, a god, is simply an overarching misunderstanding of the Catholic/Orthodox doctrine of deification/theosis.
Yes it is with a huge difference. The Catholic Orthodox doctrine teaches that humans can come to share in the effects of God but never in the essence of God.I do wonder if the Mormon belief in literally becoming, in substance, a god, is simply an overarching misunderstanding of the Catholic/Orthodox doctrine of deification/theosis.

This is a pretty fair comparison, I think.Yes it is with a huge difference. The Catholic Orthodox doctrine teaches that humans can come to share in the effects of God but never in the essence of God.
While the LDS doctrine teaches that men (only) can come to share in the very essence of God, and literally become godS themselves.
I think that would mean that Joseph Smith knew of deification and then corrupted it.I do wonder if the Mormon belief in literally becoming, in substance, a god, is simply an overarching misunderstanding of the Catholic/Orthodox doctrine of deification/theosis.
