I do wonder if the Mormon belief in literally becoming, in substance, a god, is simply an overarching misunderstanding of the Catholic/Orthodox doctrine of deification/theosis.

Yes it is with a huge difference. The Catholic Orthodox doctrine teaches that humans can come to share in the effects of God but never in the essence of God.

While the LDS doctrine teaches that men (only) can come to share in the very essence of God, and literally become godS themselves.

This is a pretty fair comparison, I think.

I remember being in RCIA and having to try really really really hard to divorce myself from my Mormon upbringing in trying to understand the Beatific Vision, especially so when the priest was using language so similar to the LDS doctrine of exaltation.

By the way, since the topic has been brought up, I was baptized in a flowing river 🙂

… and then the clouds opened up and a dove… I kid 😃

But seriously, I was baptized in a river in June. It was more tradition than anything else though. My great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were all baptized in the same river.

Please leave that cult!I’m trying to get out of this JW cult and join the Catholic Church.

How can they preach a “restored gospel” it contradicts the Bible

Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Hence it will NEVER fall into Apostasy.

Galatians 1:8- 8 But though we, or** an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.**

Apparently Joseph Smith was visited by the Angel Moroni or something and thats how he got the BOM golden plates or something. He was part of the occult and a con man!

I made an error, we can come to share in the energies of God and not the essence. I think I originally said “effects”.

I think that would mean that Joseph Smith knew of deification and then corrupted it.
It might be more likely that Joseph Smith led his people into polytheism without any knowledge of deification and now in a effort to make his teachings seem Christian the Mormon Church is trying to tie them to the early church fathers.
