If you can say that then you should never insult us by calling yourself a Catholic.

Paul
Well, Paul, I addressed the reason why people become Mormons. It is because the holy ghost testified of its truthfulness. Now of course some join for other reasons but it really is not a church for people who have no testimony. They quickly fall by the wayside. But my claim still stands as to why people join the lds church.

So now without the huge guilt trip do you think having two she bears eat 42 children is proper recourse for being called a “baldhead”? Seriously…
The word translated as “children” is better translated as “youths”–in Hebrew context, anyone 13-20ish

In the context of the story, Elijah, sucessor to Elisha is being challenged on his authority–bear in mind, Elisha was having to hide out from all those apostate kings–Elijah is facing a juvenile deliquint lynch mob

God protected his prophet with a bloody lesson

no it doesn’t seem proper to my human mind, nor does the wiping out of entire populations of canaanites including the animals, or even the destruction of sodom and gomorrah after all they were just living alternate lifestyles that involved the raping of virgins and blood sacrifice of infant children.

i followed the I Am An Athiest set of threads for a few weeks until I just got sick of it. you remind me of A when you write like this. not that that is a terrible thing. Some of the worlds’ finest are people who are superior to almighty God because they have such vaunted moral standards that God cant’ possibly measure up to.

If there is a God, I’m convinced he wants us to treat one another decently, and build a better world. The Jesus character is a good example of that. If there isn’t a God, then treating one another decently is still a good idea. Doesn’t really matter in the end, and no faith (other than a faith in humanity and civilization) is required.
with all respect friend you seem unsure about God. still your heart is in the right place for i agree that treating people with respect and love is the thing that Jesus wants most. One problem though is the definition of Love, because as you know there are many, and most of them comingg from human origins are less Love than Lust, less giving than taking. The bible describes God as being Love, and that is where I choose to start my journey. if there are things which make me question that, even things written in teh bible, i just take a deep breath and tr y to remember how stupid I am, pray for some understanding and trust in my Lord and Master to show me his perfect loving way. no guilt trips, just realism.

If JS wrote the book of mormon and he was a fraud, why would he fall for the kinderhook plates? It doesn’t make sense. Perhaps the Fairlds wiki is more correct in its interpretation.
some time back as a lurker i bought the Bushman book Rough Stone Rolling when whyme was talking about it a lot. Mostly the book is very good, and it has a section on thee kinderhok plates. As I recall it Joseph started down the path but according to Bushman sensed the danger and pulled away from it before swallowing the entire kinderhook. i must re-read that chapter soon.

Sounds pretty absurd to me. So that only applies to religions which actively proselytize, and not to those ones that don’t? And you are further telling me that the Catholic Church does not proselytize?? So what happened to the great commandment to actively preach the gospel to “every creature”? The Catholic Church does not keep that commandment?
no the catholic chruch does preach the gospel, and in many ways, including door to door in some places. it’s a big world and a big, big church with lots of various ways of doing things. i was talking about the search for itchy ears, which is not something catholics do. WE want people who are coming in with full disclosure and foreknowledge, that is why we train for a year before the sacraments rather than hustle hustel get them in and start tithing.
No, there is no such instance recorded in either book; and that proves exactly what? What conclusion do you intend to draw from that?
i conclude from it that it is nonbiblical for the Holy Ghost to contradict Himself. it is by your own saying non book of mormanical. Therefore if there are contradictory revealings from a spirit realm then at least one of them is false. the question is, and the one I had asked, and repeat for you here, is how do you know yours is the true one? in the past you have said, you just know. well the bible tells of a girl who had a spirit of divination which Paul cast from her, an event which led to his incarce4ration for depriving some thugs of their livleihood. So we know that such things do exist, and that they can be powerful forces for error.
And that proves what exactly?
sorry i cannot remember the exact context of my reporting of that but let’s just say that it proves a few things TO ME one of tehm being that mormon missionaries are not trained to respect the religious beliefs of others but rather to view them as targets, and that they are capable of hounding people over a long period of time hoping to break down thier will in this case by simultaneously going after othr family members one by one. yes i am a witness so don’t tell me that I’m mistaken. still i do not blame all mormons or even the religion itself as we know that individuals often do things that are jmproper.
Which Mormons “have written of this”? Anti-Mormons maybe, but not Mormons that I know of. Haven’t a clue what you are talking about.
fine before I spend precious time digging out a quote or three from notable morman leaders are you actaully here and in this place going to deny that Joseph and other mormon leaders as well as lay people such as yourself have taught and believed taht all christian religion is apostate and have used teh word “abomination” among others to describe them?

i will not quote your last prargraph in order to save space. no, i know very little about mormon religion, and have said the same, but my knowledge is improving by the day. i already know tons more than the young lady who broke her mothers’ heart by throwing away her faith in order to have amormon boy. and what really galls me is that the mormons didn’t care that she knows nothing. in no time they grabed her, dipped her in teh pool, confirmed her next day, adn said, get out the checkbook. Then they started asking her if any of her other family membrers might want the same blessing. i have to work real hard at being a christian with forgiveness and sisterly love seeing this take place, now I don’t hold you, z, responsible for this state of being but i think you approve of it. am i wrong?

And her is a different wiki:

en.fairmormon.org/Kinderhook_Plates

Differing viewpoints are wonderful. They spark discussion and dialogue.

If JS wrote the book of mormon and he was a fraud, why would he fall for the kinderhook plates? It doesn’t make sense. Perhaps the Fairlds wiki is more correct in its interpretation.
easy. JS saw an opportunity to further his con. I can easily see where he thought these plates were real and figured no one could translate them so he made something up. just like he did with the mummy scrolls that became the BoA.

So when you preach your religion it is called “preaching,” but when we preach it is called “looking for itchy ears”? And who made you the judge and jury of that?

As for the amount of instruction given before baptism, we follow the biblical pattern, and baptize when a sufficient expression of faith is made. Jesus and His Apostles did not need to “train” people for a year before baptizing them, and neither do we.

Good story. The only difference is that Paul had the Apostolic power to rebuke the evil spirit and cast it out, thus demonstrating to all who possessed the true Spirit and who had the false one. If the Catholic Church has the Apostolic authority that Paul and Peter had, as she claims she does, and possesses the true Spirit; and if Mormonism has the evil spirit; then let the Catholic Church exercise her priestly power as Paul did, and cast out the evil spirit allegedly influencing Mormonism, so that the whole world can be convinced. If they can’t, how do you know that the evil spirit does not reside in the opposite camp?
sorry i cannot remember the exact context of my reporting of that but let’s just say that it proves a few things TO ME one of tehm being that mormon missionaries are not trained to respect the religious beliefs of others but rather to view them as targets, and that they are capable of hounding people over a long period of time hoping to break down thier will in this case by simultaneously going after othr family members one by one. yes i am a witness so don’t tell me that I’m mistaken. still i do not blame all mormons or even the religion itself as we know that individuals often do things that are jmproper.
That is rubbish. We don’t “hound” anybody. We go and preach to people after they agree to allow us to visit them. We have no power to “hound” anybody, and we don’t. When somebody joins our Church, they sometimes refer other family member to the missionaries to visit them, because they are excited about what they have discovered, and want their relatives to have the same. But we visit with them if they want us to, not if they don’t.

That is another untruth. We certainly believe that Christianity is apostate, and have nothing to apologize for saying it. But that does not translate into saying that other Christian churches are an “abomination”. I have never said that, nor have any other Mormons I am acquainted with. Quit telling lies about us.

You mean the falsehood you learn about the Mormon religion is improving by the day! You seek your knowledge of Mormonism from the enemies of the Church, which means that you seek only falsehood about Mormonism, not the truth.
i already know tons more than the young lady who broke her mothers’ heart by throwing away her faith in order to have amormon boy. and what really galls me is that the mormons didn’t care that she knows nothing. in no time they grabed her, dipped her in teh pool, confirmed her next day, adn said, get out the checkbook.
That is not true either. We don’t just grab people and dip them in the pool. We do instruct them for several weeks about the basics of our belief. We don’t just ask them to get out their checkbook either. We inform them before they join that that is what is expected of them. They don’t have to join if they don’t want to.
Then they started asking her if any of her other family membrers might want the same blessing. i have to work real hard at being a christian with forgiveness and sisterly love seeing this take place, now I don’t hold you, z, responsible for this state of being but i think you approve of it. am i wrong?
I certainly do. This is a proselytizing religion. We make no bones about that. The Lord has commanded us to preach the gospel to “every creature,” and that is exactly what we do. As Paul did, so do we. He made himself “all things to all men to save some,” and so do we. They preached the gospel to all, in the face of persecution from Jews and Romans and Pagans alike, and so do we. Who cares that you or anybody else doesn’t like it?

I am reminded of what Peter and John said to the Jewish Council after they had been scourged and charged that they should not longer preach in the name of Jesus. They replied: “Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye” (Acts 4:19). We do what the Lord has commanded us to do, not what suits somebody’s convenience. But at the end of the day nobody is forced to join our Church. Nobody is even forced to listen to our message. If they don’t want to, all they have to do is to say no, and we go away. But we will not shirk the responsibility God has placed on us to spread His gospel in the face of persecution, just because somebody doesn’t like it.

Actually, cyberjacques is correct. Some locals in Kinderhook, Illinois had a blacksmith manufacture several bell-shaped plates and engraved them with the same markings that were found on a box of tea. They then presented these forgeries to Smith as discoveries’ and asked him to translate them. Smith fell for the hoax and determined that '… they contain the history of the person with whom they were found. He was a descendant of Ham, through the loins of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and that he received his kingdom from the Ruler of heaven and earth".:rotfl:

OTOH, one might - conceivably - defend their authenticity by saying that the locals were, unbeknownst to them, inspired by God/a god to write a text which meant what JS said it did.

But the same type of reasoning would “prove” the Divine inspiration of anything with markings on it one cares to mention. So it doesn’t prove anything.

Some of the arguments for the inspiration & total inerrancy of the Bible would apply equally well to (let us say) “The Lord of the Rings”; so far - or AFAIK anyway - no one has suggested that TLOTR is a revelation; but give the book a few centuries, & who knows ? Maybe the KP will be Mormon Scripture by then too.

It’s no different than any other religion although I do agree the mountain of evidence against Mormonism seems impossible to ignore. However when it comes to matters of religion, death, etc… People need answers and people are more apt to shut off their good sense to get those answers.

Catholics believe a scapular will save them from the fires of hell, that blessed or excorcised medals have powers against evil, that bowing before statues praying and lighting candles doesn’t break the 2nd commandment. That by eating the Eucharist they are literally eating the flesh and blood of the God/Man Jesus. Catholics can overlook the attrocities commited in the Churches name organized and approved by Popes the Vicars of Christ. Catholics believe indulgences can save them from the fires of purgatory a get out of jail card so to speak or time off for good behavior.

From the outside looking in these ideas seem so nutty that you can’t understand how anyone believes them, but they do because 1. It’s more often than not their tradition 2. They like it 3. It provides them adequate answers so they can sleep at night.

It might help if some of the items in that list were accurately described

OTOH, maybe [something of] your point is verified by a comment like that 🙂
We live in the most difficult times, 2000 years ago when no one had any idea what made the plants grow and the sun shine, or the night become day believing in God was simple, almost impossible not to. Today we have science explaining 10,000 times more (accurately) than religion ever has. Faith is very difficult to maintain today, for any religion to have faithful they have to believe the unbelievable or even disproven and come up with alternate explanations on the fly, Mormonism is no different, just more new.

Faith is unaffected by science & science by faith - unless they give

  • incompatible accounts
  • of the same phenomenon
  • under the same aspect or in** the same sense**.
If a Christian were to insist that the motions of the planets were sufficiently accounted for by being attributed to angelic movers, & that for that reason accounting for their motions by gravitation was a sign of unbelief - then there would be conflict. Gravitation could be defended as evidence of angelic superintendence of the planets; or, it could equally well be regarded as a contradiction of it.
By contrast, there is no common ground between
  • the scientific
  • & the (Catholic) dogmatic
accounts of a consecrated Host: so there is no collision.
There are collisions between Mormon theism, & Christian theism, because incompatible accounts are given of the same phenomena & under the same aspect. 😦
