What do you all think of Mormonism? I am a lifelong Catholic, and I will die a Catholic so don’t worry there. I believe in the One Holy Catholic And Apostolic Church. I believe in Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture. I believe in the Catholic Church, and there are many things that I believe in. But, the Catholic Church is one of them. I believe that there are several things that I have been believing in. I believe in something that I have been able to understand. I have understood the Catholic Church.

last Sunday, I went to Church with some Mormons just to experience it. So far, I have been to a Greek Orthodox Church, a Eastern Catholic Church, a baptist Church (my ex girlfriend was aBaptist), a Methodist Church and a Presbyterian Church. I want to believe in the right church. The Mormons believe that Jesus Christ came to America and preached to the Indians. The Mormons also believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet and in the book of Mormon. They believe that some 14 year old boy got gold plates and translated the book of Mormon. It sounds kooky to me, what do you think?

I know the Catholic Church to be the true Church. Protestants separated from the Catholic Church and they broke off against the Protestant Reformation when Martin Luther decided that he wanted to get married, Martin Luther was a Catholic Priest that nailed his thesis to the Church Door in Germany, starting the Protestant Reformation.

I think that the Catholic Church is the true Church and I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I believe in the right church and I believe in the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I believe in the Catholic Church.

I believe that there are things that we should all believe in, like the Holy Trinity. I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, and I know it to be true. I have been able to believe in some things and I have been able to question some things about this life.

I was raised a Catholic Christian and I will remain a Catholic Christian till the end of my death. I want to experience all of the major world religions services before I die. I have been to a Mosque, I have been to a Jewish Temple and I have been to a Buddhist Temple.

I would suggest that you educate yourself, and quit trying out other churches.

You appear to be trying to hypnotize yourself with statements of your faith-- maybe because of the sales pitch laid on you when visiting the LDS.

Learn more about your Catholic faith. Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church to better understand your faith. Read the Mormon-related threads here, because once you get on their radar, they are going to persist in trying to convert you.

If there is any “Christian” related belief system out there that is totally derailed and wrong on everything it teaches, it’s the LDS church.

They may seem charming but just you get on the wrong side of them and they will shut you off like you never existed.

I don’t think it is any more kooky than the beliefs of other faiths.

No, we do not believe in the traditional doctrine of the Trinity.

Was the book of Mormon really written by Mormon or was it written by Joseph Smith? I think the Book of Mormon was written by Joseph Smith.

Critics tend to believe that Joseph Smith and/or his companions wrote the Book of Mormon. Latter-day Saints don’t believe that the Book of Mormon was written by “Mormon”. Instead, we believe that the Book of Mormon is a compilation of books written by various prophets that was then abridged by the prophet Mormon.

Current research indicates that the Book of Mormon was written by Joseph Smith and his friends, borrowing many themes from other literature available at the time (1830).

You’re right. It was the King of England who wanted to get a divorce. Martin Luther did eventually get married but he did not have the time to create something, Martin Luther was a crackpot. The Catholic Church is the Church that Jesus Christ founded, and Jesus made Peter the first Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. The Greek Orthodox split off from the Roman Catholic Church.

The Roman Catholic Church is the true Universal Church.

I’m very confused by your statement. If the LDS don’t seek to reform Christianity, what is it your sect believes needs restoring? The Catholic Church is the Church established by Jesus, the incarnate God. You don’t worship the same God as Christians. How do you propose to restore a faith you don’t even believe in?

Christians believe in the Holy Trinity and they believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Church of LDS does not believe in the Holy Trinity and they do not believe in any of the doctrines professed by the early Church. There are different churches but the LDS are not the true church, Christians believe in the Trinity, even the Protestants and the Orthodox believe in the Trinity.

Here are the facts:

Joseph Smith claims to have seen God after many others in his neck of the woods claimed the same thing. Oddly, Joseph never really knew what happened because he had at least 9 different versions of that vision.

He was a treasure seeker and con man who was actually convicted. He would use 2 rocks he called seer stones to predict where treasure was buried. His claims were always wrong.

Later, he took some stones from someone else and never gave them back. Claimed these were also seer stones. When the treasure hunting thing did not pan out, he claimed to have been given gold plates that no one else ever saw (actually, reports here vary…some of his family and friends claimed to have seen them, other claimed they were only seen with “spiritual eyes”)

He claimed the plates were written in Reformed Egyptian and he could use the magic seer stones to translate them. Amazingly enough, it turns out the stones translated them into King James English and even more amazing, almost word for word, in some sections, as chapters in the Bible. Also, in an effort to sound Biblical, the book is generously peppered with “and it came to pass…”

Joseph then claimed to be a prophet. He got followers and began to spread his word. They moved to Ohio where Joseph started a bank that swindled a lot of people out of a lot of money. He fled. In the meantime, he had many “revelations”. One of my favorites is when God told Joseph that the Mormons should build Joseph a large house where Joseph would then sell alcohol.

Joseph’s teachings included the notion that God was once a sinful man. He also taught God was Spirit and later changed it to flesh

Later, he was caught having an affair with Fanny Alger. His response was to legalize polygamy.

When he destroyed a printing press for printing things he did not like, he got in trouble with the law. He tried to run again, but his family and friends hinted he was a coward. So, he gave himself up. While in jail, he had an illegal gun. A mob rushed the jail and he empited the gun blindly down the stairs. He then tried to run again and was shot as he was crawling out of a window.

Thru their history, they have called the Catholic Church the church of Satan and many other horrible things.

for the most part, Mormons are awfully good people. They strive to do the right thing and follow the teachings of God. They are among the finest people you will ever know. The mostly do not drink or smoke, they take care of their neighbors, and they have a camaraderie sorely missing in the Catholic Church.

I believe their prophets are false prophets and their Church is not a true Church. But, it is best to love the members, but not the teachings. Love them and pray for them

As far as I know, I’ve only ever met one Mormon in person - a student at the Catholic university I attend. Unfortunately this person has given me reason to form a bad impression of her. Though I’m sure there are many lovely Mormons out there.

I studied Mormonism briefly, and it did strike me as a belief system that is odd and concerning, yet interesting.

I was making a distinction between “reformation” and “restoration”. Latter-day Saints do not believe that our Church was established after someone wanted to reform allegedly incorrect beliefs by reading the Bible or other methods. Instead, we believe that God, through revelation, restored His Church and various beliefs, practices, and priesthood.

The Catholic Church is the Church established by Jesus, the incarnate God.

I understand that that is your belief.

You don’t worship the same God as Christians.

For a Latter-day Saint, it would be more precise to say that we do not believe in the traditional definitions ascribed to the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, i.e., we reject the traditional doctrine of the Trinity. We further believe that we are Christians, in that we believe in Jesus Christ as our divine Savior, and that it is only through His atoning sacrifice that we can receive eternal life. Many Latter-day Saints make a distinction between “traditional Christians” (i.e. those holding to the Trinity and/or the definitions of the ancient Creeds and Ecumenical Councils), and us. I believe that I am a Christian, just not a traditional or Nicene one if you will.

How do you propose to restore a faith you don’t even believe in?

This is a somewhat odd question, but I think it is because you are asking it from your own view that the Catholic faith is the original, unchanged faith of the New Testament Church, which is understandable. Latter-day Saints do not share that view (and I understand that various traditional Christian churches also do not share that view), which is why we believe that God restored various beliefs and practices that were lost anciently, as well as providing continuing revelation to provide further light and knowledge about His Gospel.

I understand that is your belief, or you say it is, at least. But words mean things, even in this strange modern world. A Christian is one who believes that God chose to incarnate Himself in the man Jesus, the Second Person of the Trinity. The One God in Three Persons affirmed by the Nicene Creed is the God of Christians. That’s what “Christian” means: you accept this belief of God as He revealed Himself in His Scriptures. If you worship a different definition of deity, that’s up to you. But Christians, by definition, are Trinitarians. Non-trinitarians, are by definition, not Christians. You can appropriate the term, but that doesn’t make it so.

I’ve always thought that most Mormons make lovely neighbors and co-workers. They are not Christians, which is sad for them. We all need to pray for all sincere seekers who groping their way to the true God.

The worst part of LDS salvation is that it costs money.

You cannot get to the LDS highest level of heaven without going to the temple. You cannot go to the temple unless you pay tithing.

It is like paying money to go to heaven.
