Hey now everybody,
I have a question, I work in a Mormon Family owned business. One of my co-workers and good friend has said that they have some apocryphal scripture they can use to refute the Catholic Church but he will not tell me. Does anybody know of these so called verses that refute the CC? if so, I would like to beat him to the punch like I normally do.😃

Don’t you think if the Mormons had said scripture they would not have used them already?

Do you remember a show on one of the cable channels that talked about a young man who was able to forge Mormon documents to such an extant that the Mormons paid a great deal for these documents never realizing that they were forged? I wouldn’t put any stock in what the Mormons had to say.

Let them put up or shut up.
Just my HO.

🙂 GF, it truly is a case of “put up or shut up.” But perhaps your friend is trying the ploy suddenly popular with some Mormons of co-opting the Church Fathers and reading into them some LDS doctrines, e.g., the Father, Son and Holy Spirit being three separate entitites but “one in purpose”, and man being able to become a god of his own universe (the “eternal progression” doctrine).

I once brought up the subject of “eternal progression” with a couple of mormon missionairies, and they denied that they had that teaching. Yet I’ve seen that stated as a belief a few times elsewhere.

Put up or shut up." is what I tell him (them there are several co-workers which are Mormon:eek: ) and he cant do it. It is a challenge to plant seeds in these people, especially when they are your friends and all.

GF, would it be possible to meet with him one-on-one outside of work to begin seed planting? 🙂 Paul Dupre, a regular contributor to CAF and a former Mormon, has an excellent tape about his return to the Church that you might give to your friend - or at least find helpful in your discussions with him:

They believe that the Book of Mormon is equal to Scripture. He will ask you to read the Book of Moron amd carefully study it.

The funny thing is that because we work close to each other everyday we are always discussing something about both our beliefs. His always falls short and I am consistently trying to plant seeds:D He is always amazed that I do know something about his church and seems perplexed of where I got this info? because to them it is all supposed to be kept a secret and only for the elite Mormon.

🙂 Then you may know even more - and in essence you do - than your friend. Maybe you could invite him to attend a Mass with you so he can be privy to all our Catholic secrets. 😉

He has asked me to attend a Mormon service and I have asked him to go to Mass as well. He is an ex-Catholic and he once said that he knew what our Mass was all about that but after asking him questions he knows nothing about Catholic Mass. He said he would go to Mass but he wants me to go to one of his. What do you think is it wise to go to a Mormon service? Also my friend was a missionary and I know when we talk he is trying to convert me and I tell him I dint want to convert him I just want him to understand Catholic theology. I do know he goes home thinking about what I tell him because I could tell it bothers him that he falls short all the time.

He’s no doubt bothered by the fact that there truly are things about the Catholic Church that he didn’t know when he left for Mormonism; it’s easier to leave when you think you know what you’re leaving. As far as attending his service with him (once! 😉 ), I don’t see a problem with it since you are very well-grounded in the Faith - just be prepared to be “love-bombed”. As for him attending a Mass with you, is there a particularly reverent liturgy at your parish - or at a neighboring one (or at a local monastery) - that would help elicit the knowledge of the true Beauty he has abandoned?

I believe you are talking about Mark William Hofmann.

We usually discuss what was read and said at our church over the weekend on Monday mornings. I always explain how Mass parallels with our faith. It seems from what he says about their service is that they read out of the Book of Mormon more than the bible, anyways I dint know if I want to go just yet. I want to get a bit more versed in their theology before I check it out:thumbsup:

Probably just some kid, or some pridefull-sack. He’s probably the type of person that would show you Luke 11:27-28 “…Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he (Jesus) said, yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” and tell you that the scripture teaches against praying to Mary. If I were you, I’d just let it go.

By the way, the mormon church itself very rarely actually teaches their members how to disprove other religions. So for the most part, when mormons try to disprove another religion, it’s from their own studies. So your friend probably cracked open his Bible, read a verse which he interpreted to mean not to pray to saints or something, and thought “Hey wait a minute! That’s what catholics believe!”

Yeah, just ignore the dude. Especially since, as you said, this is your work-place.

If you want to learn more about the Mormon religion, look for books by Isaiah Bennett. He was a Catholic priest, who became a Mormon, later reverted to Catholicism. He’s very knowledgeable about Mormon doctrine and discusses very clearly the training given to Mormon missionaries. One book is called “Inside Mormonism”, and I think the other is called “When Mormons Call”.

Peace,
Linda
