I took a look at the source article. All those membership numbers are self-reported by the participating churches. There appears to be no standard for evaluating the accuracy of the reports, nor for comparing the accuracy of one church’s report to another’s.

I will admit that the following is second-hand, but I do have to wonder:

What I’ve heard is that the Catholics attempt to report an accurate number, by compiling the currently registered members in the parishes.

However, I’ve heard that the Mormons report everyone they baptise, and don’t purge their lists of fallen-away members. If that is true, it is quite likely that the Mormons’ number is seriously inflated.

The LDS church counts every baptized member. If someone has fallen away but never officially resigned, they continue to be counted until the age of 110.
They assume by the time someone reaches their 110th birhday they most likely have since died…



It was another one of those odd things that keeps their numbers inflated.
Im not sure what the world wide membership is at now so I will guess 13million.
But that is just baptized members that still are on the list in Salt Lake. That is not active membership.

They have a poor retention rate for adult baptisms. Vast majority go inactive by the time a year has past.

This would be the same for all churches and not just the lds church. Many catholics do not go to church and yet, they are still counted as catholics. Other catholics have left the catholic church and yet, they are still included as catholics, if they did not resign from the catholic church. So I am not sure what your point is. So, are catholic numbers inflated too?
