"Pope St. Dionysius in 259 AD wrote a public letter to Bishop Dionysius of Alexandria in which he condemned the errors of Sabellius and the tritheist Marcion. The significance of this document lies in the fact that it paved the way for the Church’s later teaching, notably in the famous councils that dealt with the person of Christ. The popes led the way in defending the revealed mystery of the Trinity and in explaining its meaning, long before ecumenical councils entered the controversy. Even a few sentences from the pope’s letter will show the intransigence of the Church and her sureness of mind about the Trinity:
Code:
Sabellius’ blasphemy is that the Son is the Father, and the Father the Son. These men somehow teach there are three gods since they divine the sacred unity into three different hypostases completely separate from one another.

The teaching of the foolish Marcion who divides and separates the one God into three principles is a teaching from the devil, not the teaching of those who truly follow Christ and who are content with the teachings of the Savior."
What non-Catholics tend not to understand is the development of Doctrine as well, such as we have the essential truth which never changes, but it can be explained and expounded upon as we go along.

The will argue that it wasn’t then as it is now. Well, that’s because it can develop. Didn’t mean it was wrong before.

Just go away. I am not in the mood for childish taunting.
Has everyone noticed how Snow is unable to answer me so he says something stupid like “Just go away, I am not in the mood for childish taunting”

The reality is that he can not defend his faith because it is heretical. He is running away once again. Would any other mormon like to come to his rescue???

I have this same problem with him in another thread. It seems to be a common thing he/she does.

Once again my friend (I am using that as a figure of speech only)
You are making an erroneous assumtion that the bible alone or Sola Scriptura is the only source of Devine communication with God’s creatures.
I made so such erroneous assumption and you cannot demonstrate that I did. Please do not make up things about me. I do not even believe that the Bible is the sole source of divine communication and have said so several times on this board.
There is also Sacred tradition and magisterial teaching. All three of these communicative, religeous dynamics are in place in Christ’s only church and collectively form the Sacred Deposit of Faith… Only the Catholic church can trace its genesis to Peter.
Do you know how many mormon missionaries have told me that only the Catholic and mormon faith can be Christ true church? Heaven forbid.
No, why? Is the number relevant or important?

Go molest someone else. You are now on the ignore list.

The Trinity - the modern concept of the Trinity as decided upon by the Creeds and Councils of the 4th and 5th century "
Indeed, the issue of homoousios cannot, to my knowledge even be inferred from anything in the NT and was, in fact, put into the creedal doctrine of the Trinity by a non-Christian at Nicea.
You realize of course that this statement I disagree with entirely. Although Constantine was not baptizes, putting it off until his deathbed, I would not say he was not Christian as you have already alluded to. I imagine your comments about Constantine is to impugn the doctrine? There is nothing wrong in this method but the holiness of the Church’s members does not disqualify what the Church teaches. It doesn’t matter and I will not address it further. That isn’t to say that it would never matter but I really consider Constantine as a minor character that allowed the faith to be openly practiced but was very flawed.
The definition of Homoousios I will be using is of one and the same substance.
I find your usage of modern concept funny when you define modern as 4th and 5th century. :bounce: But I take your meaning, I think, : and would say that this definition was not new that it was what the apostles taught.
You state that you don’t believe that it is inferred.
By inferred do you mean?
Webster Dictionary
To derive as a conclusion from facts or premises
2: to involve or indicate by inference, association, or necessary consequence rather than by direct statement 3: to contain potentially
4: suggest, hint
I think we can agree that the Trinity is in the Bible and set aside that we do not mean the same thing. This is a problem because if we are not on the same ground than it might explain why you do not see how we see that the Trinity as defined at the Council of Nicea is what Scripture has always taught.
The versus that came to mind immediately were:

John 10:30
John 5:18
John 14:9
These versus say that Jesus and the Father are one. It can be inferred to mean equal. I already know that you can and do have a different meaning. That isn’t the point. The point is can you infer the teaching from these versus. I say yes you say no I assume;) .
I also found this web site while searching for these versus

I do believe that these versus are sufficient to show that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Is the same substance. You obviously interpret them differently but you should be able to see that someone else can infer in them that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are the same substance.
He is someone who dissents from more consensus scholarly opinion about Nicea but, as I said, he appears to be a serious scholar.
He is a traditionalist and does usually takes the traditional view. I am not sure whom you are referring to when you say scholarly opinion. I did do a quick search and all I found was his same opinion. After what you said I was surprised. Modern research in my opinion is invalid because of their inability to accept previous research as being valid. I believe their research methods are tainted and pc. Just because it is a majority does not make them more right. Yes, I know it doesn’t make them wrong either:p

You realize of course that this statement I disagree with entirely. Although Constantine was not baptizes, putting it off until his deathbed, I would not say he was not Christian as you have already alluded to.
Your’s is one opinion, mine is another. What is indisputable is that he wasn’t enough of a Christian to actually be baptized a Christian.
I imagine your comments about Constantine is to impugn the doctrine? There is nothing wrong in this method but the holiness of the Church’s members does not disqualify what the Church teaches.
Yes - that’s probably so. Constantine’s role casts a shadow on the council.
  1. Constantine was a not a baptized Christian.
  2. Constantine was a repeat murderer - as I recall, both before and after Nicea.
  3. Constantine called, convoked and paid for the Council.
  4. Constantine presided (was the president) of the Council and participated in the debates. He proposed a key feature of the Trinitarian doctrine with, despite it’s poor reputation, was approved.
  5. Constantine threaten those that would not agree to the Creed with death and exile and actually followed through on his threats.
  6. Constantine, who was not even a member of the Church, appointed Bishops in the Church.
I find all that troubling.
It doesn’t matter and I will not address it further. That isn’t to say that it would never matter but I really consider Constantine as a minor character that allowed the faith to be openly practiced but was very flawed.
I dunno - what would you say if someone like Mussolini had presided at Vatican II, had participated in the debates, threatened those who would not agree and had appointed bishops.

Would you still say it did not matter?
The definition of Homoousios I will be using is of one and the same substance.
I find your usage of modern concept funny when you define modern as 4th and 5th century. :bounce: But I take your meaning, I think, : and would say that this definition was not new that it was what the apostles taught.
If the apostles believed it, there is absolutely no record of it.
You state that you don’t believe that it is inferred.
By inferred do you mean?
Webster Dictionary
For example - God’s nature, whether embodied and anthropomorphic or not is not explicitly stated in the Bible but may be inferred from the Bible
I think we can agree that the Trinity is in the Bible and set aside that we do not mean the same thing. I disagree, I do not think that any of those demonstrate same substance.

Did you see this already:

Catholic encyclopedia notes that Trinitarianism doesn’t really appear until the last 25 years of the 4th century:
Trinitarian discussion, Roman Catholic as well as others, presents a somewhat unsteady silhouette. Two things have happened. There is the recognition on the part of exegetes and Biblical theologians, including a constantly growing number of Roman Catholics, that one should not speak of Trinitarianism in the New Testament without serious qualification. There is also the closely parallel recognition on the part of historians of dogma and systematic theologians that when one does speak of an unqualified Trinitarianism, one has moved from the period of Christian origins to, say, the last quadrant of the 4th century. RL Richard, “Trinity, Holy”, in New Catholic Encyclopedia, 15 vols. (New York:McGraw-Hill, 1967), 14:295.
A Jesuit [Catholic] scholar says this:

There is no formal doctrine of the Trinity in the New Testament writers, if this means an explicit teaching that in one God there are three co-equal divine persons. But the three are there, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and a triadic ground plan is there, and triadic formulas are there…The Biblical witness to God, as we have seen, did not contain any formal or formulated doctrine of the Trinity, any explicit teaching that in one God there are three co-equal divine persons. Edmund J. Fortman, The Triune God: A Historical Study of the Doctrine of the Trinity (Philadelphia: Westminster Press, 1972), 32,35.

As I mentioned earlier I do not have his book but as I recall his dissents from the general scholarly view that Constantine presided at Nicea. I can provide about a dozen or more references from other scholars.

I have this same problem with him in another thread. It seems to be a common thing he/she does.
I have asked Snow repeatedly to defend the mormon position on several issues notably their polytheistic view of the Trinity, Relegating Jesus to the Lord of this world only, their belief that you can become a God and have dominion over your own world.
He drives Rebecca crazy too. For your information I am a cradle Catholic male.

This is my last visit to this thread. God Bless you, God love you and Goodbye. I guess I better get back to Matthew 25:31-46.

If I am not mistaken, the Marcionites also performed baptism for the dead. Proto LDS?

Your’s is one opinion, mine is another. What is indisputable is that he wasn’t enough of a Christian to actually be baptized a Christian.
I believe both equally valid. I don’t think you are taking into account the belief at the time. Since Baptism took away all sin, It was the unfortunate custom to wait so that all sins could be absolved. As you have mentioned, he had many.
Yes - that’s probably so. Constantine’s role casts a shadow on the council.

Why I said that is not to get into a debate that neither of us could really win. First of all there is so much more that was going on than I care to try to narrate. I will just respect your opinion and I hope you will respect mine.👍
If the apostles believed it, there is absolutely no record of it.
I disagree. I believe that Tradition bears it out both oral and written.
I disagree, I do not think that any of those demonstrate same substance.
I expected you to say this. I think it does. You won’t convince me and obviously I won’t convince you. But I do think it would be dishonest for you to say that there is no inference. You may disagree about interpretation but you should be able to see that others would find an inference.

I am not fond of the New Catholic Encyclopedia. I much prefer the old
In Scripture there is as yet no single term by which the Three Divine Persons are denoted together. The word trias (of which the Latin trinitas is a translation) is first found in Theophilus of Antioch about A.D. 180. He speaks of "the Trinity of God [the Father], His Word and His Wisdom (To Autolycus II.15). The term may, of course, have been in use before his time. Afterwards it appears in its Latin form of trinitas in Tertullian (On Pudicity 21). In the next century the word is in general use. It is found in many passages of Origen (“In Ps. xvii”, 15). The first creed in which it appears is that of Origen’s pupil, Gregory Thaumaturgus. In his Ekthesis tes pisteos composed between 260 and 270, he writes:
A Jesuit [Catholic] scholar says this:
There is no formal doctrine of the Trinity in the New Testament writers, if this means an explicit teaching that in one God there are three co-equal divine persons. This sound very close to the anonymous missionaries I quoted that you rightfully dismissed.
As I mentioned earlier I do not have his book but as I recall his dissents from the general scholarly view that Constantine presided at Nicea. I can provide about a dozen or more references from other scholars.
I covered this pretty well I thought. I think it would not be fruitful to cover the same ground. It boils down to one opinion versus another. Like I said he gives a lot of citations.

It is you who need to be rescued. You have no understanding of Mormonism whatsoever. You post silly objections which are strawmen and then become proud of yourself when you think you demolish what we never believed in the first place. It is just silly.

Then you apologize to Snow, and in the next post come back with vindictive name calling.

Other than that, you’re doing great.

Lets just all be honest for about 2 seconds. The Mormon church was founding by a man who used a “seeing stone” to translate, take from KJV, and create a book of Mormon. then he blackmailed little girls to have sex with him and then he married them all. the religion believes in racial purity and is pretty much a load of ****. Joseph Smith told some great lies and got away with it. All you Mormons who just had a revelation and decided to convert, just follow the link.

Let’s see. This is a thread about Mormons and the Bible. You object to my characterization about the non-Biblical portions of the Trinity. I challenge you to prove that I am mistaken and now you claim that I am not addressing the Book of Abraham?
Your beliefs regarding the Trinity and the Bible all go to the same source…the absolute obsession by Mormons to somehow show that your religion isn’t as irrelevant as it is. No apostasy, no need for a so-called “restoration”.

Still waiting for proof of an apostasy. I think you are maybe Mormon #30 to come around with the same assertions, rolled up with proselytizing attempts (sending people to mormon.org).

Every one of you think you got something special going.
Back to the topic of this thread… Please provide evidence that what you say I am mistaken about re the Trinity is in fact mistaken.
Prediction: You can’t and won’t.
What would be the point? You have no desire to learn the truth.
You obviously haven’t read much of what I have posted. I think the RCC is one of the worlds great denominations, full of much richness and importance. It is worthy of thanks and appreciation. I respect it immensely.
You obviously haven’t been reading your own posts. Your entire purpose has been pointed in one direction, proving that the Roman Catholic Church is a fraud. For if it isn’t the truth, then that is what it is.
You seem to take umbrage at a discussion of the facts. Try not to let your emotions get the better of you.
Think so? I take “umbrage” at the falsehoods and lies that are Mormonism. If you would like me to make a list of them, I gladly will, but I am sure your response will be to whine that I am denigrating your religion. Mormons can’t seem to deal with the truth of their own religion.
Unlike you, I provide substantiation for what I claim.
When I see something substantial from you, I’ll be glad to point it out. So far. Nothing.
Try this for a change. Stop calling names. Provide evidence for what you assert as fact.
Simple - that’s how adults debate.
Yes, you have pointed out several times how much of higher life form you are. Your mommy must be proud.

Oh a thread about the Bible you want to attack The Church of Jesus Christ about The Book of Abraham?

Alright.

Here’s why I don’t care:

You know very little both about what Mormons believe, about Mormon history, about Christian history and even about Catholic beliefs.

Time and time again I challenge you to support you accusations and zip, zilch, you provide nothing. If you were able to post any substantiation, I’d bet it would be the anti-Mormon fluff on the internet When I post sources, you ignore them.

As it so happens, though I am no expert, I am far more knowledgeable than you on the Book of Abraham. I don’t have to rely just on the internet, I’ve got 6 or more scholarly works on it behind me on the bookcase as well as some stuff written for the layperson. I even have some of Klaus Baer’s stuff. I’ve got answers for questions you haven’t even googled yet.

Fire away. I’ll expect responses to all my posts on the matter and scholarly sources will be required.
Yes snow, every Mormon I have ever talked to likes to throw out how many books they have read and how many degrees they have. I believe bdawg started out with this one too.

All you mormons think you are so smart, but there you are, not able to see the truth that is right in front of your eyes. You are blind and have been deceived and work ever harder and faster and making the maze and lies make sense.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ isn’t all that difficult.

To the Book of Abraham. You seem to have this idea that everyone is as stupid as you have created them to be in your mind. Must be wonderful to view yourself so smart and the world so incredibly lower than you.

“Scholarly work” on the BoA is an oxymormon. You may as well do scholarly work on kinderhook plates. Have you got that going as well. Do you have a Word doc with all of the favorable quotes that you could find, while ignoring the elephant in the room.

Smith screwed it up, big time.

For a group of people who say they trust the Bible as far as it is “translated correctly”, you have this obvious piece of work that came out of your founder’s mind, which is translated about as incorrectly as you can get.

It has to take an amazing amount of “scholarship” to get the stink off of this one. Only 6 books? You must be more gullible than you let on.

For everyone who missed it… this area of the forum is Non-Catholic Religions.

And the description under that heading is “Comparing and Contrasting Beliefs”.

Now, we do our fair share of debating- this is after all a Catholic Forum first and foremost. But to be fair, this area is for individuals of other faiths to come and question and be questioned in a FAIR, COMPASSIONATE, and CHARITABLE way.

So Catholics, and Non-Catholics alike, please note that on your further comments in NCR.

Thank you and God bless-

Rachel
