Is it possible for a Mormon to know which doctrine will stay and which one will be canned? Apparently Polygamy was a doctrine but now it isn’t “needed.” What if the current “Apostle” or whoever it is, says he has a “revelation” that God’s name is Gilbert, and that other doctrines on God’s nature aren’t needed anymore. Andrew
Not all Mormons are agreed on the polygamy thing. I was over at youtube last night watching the first of a series of half-hour videos by a polygamy-happy woman who looks to be about 70 y/o. She is VERY knowledgable about the ins and outs of Mormon polygamy, and speaks in considerable detail about the history and development of the practice. When I get time, I will go back and view the rest of #1 and also the other three.

Anyways, the main LDS group in SLC didn’t decide that polygamy isn’t “needed.” They were under pressure from the federal gov’t to dump the practice. The feds were starting to jail polygamists, and confiscate church property. Also, Utah dearly wanted statehood, but that wasn’t going to happen as long as there was a theocracy out there, or polygamy. So both had to go. TBMs today still hanker for polygamy. At least, the men do…
