Yes, all 12 had that authority, but again, Peter was the greatest among them. Also, since they all had that authority, how do we know they didn’t agree on, or elect the next leader of the church? It really boils down to either Peter bound Clement to be the next visible head of the Church, or Peter had a revelation that Clement was to be the next visible head of the Church, and the remaining Apostles sustained the revelation. (to use lds terms), or they all voted equally. Again, this is where I believe that oral tradition comes into play.I have been told by Catholics that Clement didn’t call himself “pope”. It’s not clear from the reading I’ve done (not much about him, but some) that he said he was the “one visible leader on Earth” of the church, either. Did he write that?
You would be familiar with the mount of Transfiguration experience that Peter, James, and John had in company with the Savior, invited by Him. That was not an insignificant experience, and it was not happenstance that He asked Peter, James, and John to go with Him for that experience.
Christ taught as follows about two or three as witnesses (Matthew 18):
16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
It would seem to me that three bearing witness and “establishing every word” is a stronger and more substantial and stable witness pattern than only one witness, and I think these verses bear this out. These verses also establish that the twelve all had authority to “bind and loose” on earth and in heaven.
However, I don’t see where that indicates because 3 people saw the event it meant there had to be 3 heads to Christ’s church on Earth.
I don’t think many, if any of the early Bishops of Rome used the word Pope to describe themselves. If anything, I believe that the word “Pope” developed as a term of endearment, since it essentially means “papa” I believe that it has been retroactively applied to previous Bishops of Rome as a matter of endearment, love and respect.
