I was listening to Focus on the Family last night and they were discussing Proposition 8 in California. They said the LDS members had put Catholics and Evangelicals to shame in their efforts to pass Proposition 8 and preserve traditional marriage. Of the 50,000 volunteers, the great majority were LDS.

I’ll never understand why Catholics can’t be as motivated in their efforts to defeat gay marriage and abortion as the LDS are. Overwhelmingly, Catholic states in the northeast are the most pro-abortion areas in the country while the LDS states seem to be the most pro-life, at least when it comes to who they vote for.

Enthusiasm for the LDS is an esprit de corps to them, while for Catholics enthusiasm is a personal devotion, and when enthusiasm becomes one, public ire begins, (like what had happened in the Philippines years ago).

TYhough LDS seems to side with the right, it means no competition at all, and enthusiasm doesn’t determine the real meaning of being the advocate of God. St. Paul has also his enthusiasms, yet not that evident and with proper timing:

"I ask that when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I propose to be courageous against some, who regard us as if we walked according to the flesh.:
(2 Corinthians 10:2)

True enthusiasm is the one being prompted by the Holy Spirit, with proper time with matters under heaven.

-B]The word of God is too rich in literature to take literally upon.

If this is not the time to come to the defense of traditional values, I don’t know when the proper time will be. It is way past time for Christians to stand up to defeat the culture of death invading our country and about to triumph. If we don’t stand up now I’m afraid it will be too late.

As a Mormon/Catholic who is voting “no” on Prop 8, that is a current source of embarrassment. Government has no place defining marriage one way or the other. That job belongs to individual religions to sort out themselves. As far as I’m concerned, the fact that fewer Catholics are supporting Prop 8 is a point in favor of the Catholic Church.
Mormon/Catholic? 🤷

No wonder he is voting no – he’s confused. Better hot or cold than in the middle. I’m glad I made the clear choice to become Catholic, but I am embarrassed when I see how Catholics vote.

There are two separate issues here, at least to me.

First, many Catholics have not internaised their faith. They see things like abortion or gay “marriage” as being against the faith but not important. They put other issues, insignificant ones compaired to life itself, ahead of these things. The LDS seem to have a higher level of people who accept the teachings then go out to make them happen

Second, the Catholic Church in America had 40+ years of poor catechetics. This has lead to two generations of Catholics being undereducated in the faith. Because of this, they do not fully understand WHY the Church teaches what it does, let alone WHAT we hold dear.

I’m just going a little off point here…but…Catholics and other Protestant groups in various countries outdo the Mormons in many many ways, including here in Singapore. The Mormons in Singapore aren’t very vocal at all, except for preaching to the man in the streets or making door-to-door visits.

In any case, they think the average Singaporean Catholic or Protestant is unaware of what Mormonism teaches - until they get bombarded with tonnes of Biblical quotes from both parties. I find their ‘efforts’ amusing indeed.

I’m proud of how Catholics vote; I’m a bit embarrassed about how people who say they are Catholic vote, i.e. Nancy Pelosi, etc.

I will be voting Democratic. I agree with Bart on prop 8, and I am against abortion, However, I believe that the Republican party is in deep denial about the strength of the radical right, particularly that which historically has been nurtured by the LDS church.

If there were fewer rabid homophobes, there would be fewer gays demanding the right to “marry”

The next few weeks will be very interesting.

Generally more and more Christians become lukewarm in America because they have too much, they have everything they need so they dont normally rely on the Lord.

chapter 16:49

“Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.”

sound familiar?

You are a homophobe if you are against gay marriage? Gays are simply looking for validation of their lifestyle by demanding gay marriage. Voting for infanticide and gay marriage simply makes no sense. It is impossible to say you are against abortion and then vote for politicians who refuse to outlaw it.

Do you remember the pink triangle?

It is like a person of Native American ancestry, subtly visibly so, being forced to deny it because of racism, and thus, being incapable of identifying that persecution was racially motivated.

How many unathletic boys who were more interested in books than girls have been harrassed by people calling them “queer”-- and in such situations, it is irrelevant whether they are or are not.

There is such a thing as a middle ground. It is called tolerance.

At no point in time does tolerance mean that I must condone a lifestyle that is against my faith.

Let us look more closely at your example. The specific issue of unathletic boys being called names is not an issue of condoning or condeming anyone. It is poor behavior on the part of people and it is not corrected at the source: home and schools. THere are kids every year in my CCD class that use such titles for people and things, and I do my best to correct them on it. The problem is in the use of these terms by society without considering the effects.

However, just because I am opposed to mistreating anyone for any reason, it does not mean that I have to give in to every demand made by every special interest groups. I am as opposed to this gay “marriage” thing as I would be to a man marrying a dog or polygamy. There is no issue with being homophobic, just like I am not anti-zoophyle or anti-Mormon/Islam for my other views. I see no logical reason to allow for gay “marriage” other than to make a group of radicals sleep better at night.

Abortion is the same way. There is no good way to justify any abortion. IN every case, at least one life ends and multiple are usually seriously harmed. I cannot sit back and stay silent on this any more than those who faught for civil rights for minorities, the women to have the right to vote, or those who wanted to free the slaves could. IN each case, they were told that it was the way it was and it was the law. In each case, they kept working until things changed. But some people see a million dead babies as a fair trade to a better economy. Or an end to a war that will end anyway (they all do). Or a new and better representation of AMerica. Or whatever.

What should scare people is the cross-contamination of these issues. Why should homosexuals care about protecting a woman’s “right” to murder her child? Why should those in favor of abortion care about homosexuals who cannot reproduce? Think about it…

The courts have no right to redefine marriage over the will of the people.

The homosexual lobby is not satisfied with equal rights, they want to force us to deny our faith.

If same sex marriages are made legal then schools will be forced to teach children that they have an option on who to marry.

Do you want schools teaching this to your children?

If schools refuse, they will be sued.

Please vote yes of prop 8.

You seem to be out of step with both faiths on this one. The Catholic Church and the LDS church see eye to eye on this issue. The reason that fewer catholics are not supporting Prop 8 is simple. Most have no idea of their church’s stance on the issue. Also, for many catholics, the catholic church should have no say in how they choose to live their lives.

This is well stated and true, unfortunately. And yet, the vatican news service if filled with advice in how we should make our choices and what the catholic church stance is on the issues.

I wouldn’t call the mormon position on the radical right. Rather, mormons are generally conservative on moral and social issues but they are not part of the radical right. Also, we must separate the politics of the mormon corridor with the rest of America. And the mormons in other parts of the world have no problem voting socialist or green. Mormons are world wide and as such, their voting record is varied.
