Mormons to build temple in Rome

This forum is supposed to be about the temple in Rome. I am a former Catholic who is LDS, converted at the age of 34 in 1999.

I don’t like being called a false religion. Why can’t we just talk w/o insulting one another. The Great and Abonindable (sp?) church is not any one religion, guys! It is those who do not believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That is what I was taught. I stand by it.

On our LDS forums in Facebook, we do not bash other religions. Yet on every Catholic one I have gone on someone calls LDs names. Believe what you want, but the respect shown here is minimal. I was not taught to be disrespectful at any time by any Catholic priest or CCD teacher. Maybe that is something new taught in the Catholic church, to bad mouth other religions. Is it???
And yet, we need to call a spade a spade, and sin a sin, and falsehood falsehood. Is mormonism biblical ? No. And back to the very first post, it was interesting to hear the congregation chuckle when the Rome temple was announced. Why was that ? Because no matter what the current teachings are that are pronounced vocally, McConkie made it clear what the great and abominable church was - the Catholic church. Agreed he was never the Prophet (capital P), but an LDS prophet nonetheless. The great apostasy attached the Catholic church. It is the Catholics that LDS must discredit if they are to have any foundational claim to being the “true church”. As I said in another post, my wife’s LDS bishop stated that non-LDS peoples could never obtain true peace, the peace that John 14:27 describes. LDS only.

God bless,

Hal.

Peace to LDS. Does that offend you? Well I have been told that as a Mormon too, that I will never have peace either unless I come back to the Mother church. Believe what you want. We all have the privilege of worshipping God to the dictates of our own conscience and can worship how, where or what we may. Have you read the BoM w/real intent? Just asking a question. Don’t get your feathers all ruffled. Either way, the Catholics and the Mormons both claim to be the true church. Guess we’ll find out when we’re dead. BTW the LDS General authorities asked McConkie not to publish Mormon Doctrine, but he did so anyway. And guess what? The reason for them asking McConkie not to publish the book was for the very reason you stated. No one ever claimed that all LDS including General Authorities were perfect and obedient in every thing. They are no more perfect than you.

And guess what? The reason for them asking McConkie not to publish the book was for the very reason you stated.
McConkie’s book is published by Deseret Book, which is owned by the LDS church. If your church didn’t want it published, you can be sure it wouldn’t be.

No. You are wrong. The church authorities councel its members. Then you have free agency to follow it or not.

That’s funny, because the foundation of the LDS Church is based on the premise that all other Christian churches are false.

And you should read more on the Mormon Apologetics website. See what many say about the Catholic Church.

Well I don’t really care much for having my creeds called an abomination or being called an atheist. And while you all continue to make excuses for BRM I don’t know of an equal authority in the Catholic church who made the same sort of ugly remarks against the LDS that Bruce R. McConkie did toward the Catholic church.

You could start with MAD, while Dianiad and Whyme insist they are nice I could name quite a few posters over there who have nothing nice and lots nasty to say about the Catholic Church. Are you new to being a cyber missionary?

Hi, Rebecca,
Before this thread gets closed down for being off topic, I wanted to let you know that when Mormon Doctrine was first published, it was published by Bookcraft, not Deseret Book.

Any institution that leads its followers away from believing in Christ or away from keeping the commandments of God, is what is meant by Babylon or the great and abominable church.

Obviously, for the LDS church to feel comfortable building a temple in Rome, the LDS leaders don’t feel animosity toward the Catholic leadership. Perhaps they hope some of them will come to the temple open house when it is held.

Just an FYI. I have major issues with this whole “cyber missionary” movement (if it can be called that). This isn’t some Church sanctioned program. I cringe, and I can’t really even tell you why, each time I see someone posting with their “unofficial cyber missionary” badge. 😊 I’m sure these members are well intentioned, but I think they’ve misconstrued some general counsel that’s been given. Maybe it’s just that the one’s I’ve come across tend to be like the guy in the office who’s made himself the “unofficial computer tech”, but all he really does is screw up the office computers and bug the heck out of folks. Actually, there are lots of reasons why I have issues with the whole “cyber missionary” thing, but that would be going off on a tangent…In the end, these members have the freedom to go about doing what they feel is right, whether I like it or not.

Anyways, my point is that this “movement” (I don’t even want to say the words anymore) isn’t some official or even sanctioned church program.

Kind Regards,
Finrock

Hi, Rebecca,

And you should know I worked in the publishing business for many years. Bookcraft, while not owned by the LDS Church, was owned and ran by prominent LDS business people. There were more than a few apostle’s sons working there at the time Deseret Book purchased them.

At any rate, I can assure you Parker, that if your church leaders did not want a book published by either one of these businesses, it wouldn’t. Why do you think the two publishers combined in the first place? I can tell you for a fact that it is what your church leaders wanted and directed.

I don’t really care Parker that your church is building a temple in Rome. It changes nothing of the Truth of the Catholic Church. Targeting Catholics, in order to lead them away from Truth, is not a benign practice. To pretend that your temple is not included in proselyting practices is not honest.

You might find this article somewhat interesting.

While the article talks about people contacting online missionaries through LD websites. You have to know in your heart of hearts, that they take it home with them, and continue doing what they do.

Actually that is not true. Missionaries when they are on their missions are not allowed to “surf the Net,” apart from sending emails to their families once a week. By the time they return from their missions they don’t have any such habits to “take home with them”. Do you know how many Mormon returned missionaries there are? If half of them were doing “cybermissionary work” as you call it, there would be half a million Mormons posting on CAF! It takes a special personality type to engage in gospel discussion on forums such as this; which is why there are not that many people doing it—Catholic or Mormon.

Whenever any one opens their mouth or posts anything about their respective beliefs or church they are being a missionary for their cause wheather they like it or not. Therefor we are by our words / thoughts / posts either doing good or bad, either bringing others closer to Christ or not ? Every building that is built, be it a Chapel, Cathedral or Temple is an ensign to all proclaiming what we stad for. It is then a missionary tool, nothing to be ashamed of as we all know that, “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.” We also all know how important missionary work is, “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” & “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

It is my opinion, anyone who discusses religion with others for reasons other than to learn and come to know for themselves the truth and have the desire to impart truth unto others is wasting their time. So therefor if there is any truth to be found here I hope to embrace it and if there is any truth in any of my words, thoughts, or posts I hope the sincere person will recognise it and embrace it. “But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”

I hope to see many more beautiful architecturally designed building accross Gods earth that inspire us to look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

My God bless us all in our pusuit of truth.

I don’t get the big issue they have every right in Italy to build a Temple anywhere they can afoord to do so, at the Constitutional level.

unesco.org/most/rr3ital.htm

Maybe they can build it right across from the Vatican. 👍

This will be a sad event for Mormons if they build a temple in Rome. IF this is true, how are they going to keep pointing the finger at the Catholic church in Rome as the anit Christ, while they have a presence in Rome? While Mormons point the finger at the Catholic church, they have 3 more fingers pointing right back at them as the antiChrist church. Maybe they will change their doctrine again to justify their false prophecies? That seems to work for them, It is just so sad the simple minds fall for this wind of doctrine that comes and go.

Peace
why do we have have any more right to be in rome than they do?

I thought it was obvious, I was talking about the online missionaries at the MTC,(that were discussed in the article) continuing their “work” once they went home for the day. Maybe I should have been more clear, but I thought it was obvious to anyone who read the article.🤷

Good evening twopekinguys! I hope you are doing well. 🙂

Thanks for the link. As you pointed out, this isn’t the same as these so-called “unofficial cyber missionaries”. The article is speaking to missionaries that work at the Church’s referral center in the MTC. People call in and the missionaries respond to their questions. People can also chat with a real missionary online via mormon.org. Also, the missionaries who work at the MTC do not go “home” at the end of the day, unless you are referring to them going to their dormatory in the MTC and there are no computers for them to access there. Except for the Media Referral Center and computers available to access LDS Mail, real missionaries do not have access to the internet at the MTC and do not take part in “forum” discussions. Plus, missionaries aren’t allowed to leave the MTC grounds without special approval.

I understand your sentiment, but in this case I don’t believe it is applicable.

Finrock

As for bad mouthing, I think your apostle Jeffery R. Holland was bad mouthing in his October 2007 conference talk. In it he misrepresents our understanding, mocks it and accuses us of dismissing Christ.

This man has a BA in English and an MA in religious education both from BYU. Part of the requirements for the MA are:

“Students who successfully complete the master’s degree program in Religious Education will be able to demonstrate that they have acquired an understanding of LDS scripture, doctrine and history through the process of rigorous study and personal faith (Doctrine and Covenants 88:118).”

The rest of the requirements can be read here. Where is there any indication he’s qualified to posit another religions beliefs?

Nothing you people are saying makes any sense.

Sorry, but your one-liner about Elder Holland’s talk just doesn’t make sense. I don’t know what you are talking about. It is up to you to write you message so it makes sense to people. If I can’t make sense of what you are talking about, how can I advise you on how rewrite it so it can make sense?

Sorry, I still don’t know what you are talking about. Can’t give a reply until I do.
