Okay, this is NOT a thread for attacking me on this choice. This is a thread to ask a VALID question of the Mormons on this site to avoid making an absolute idiot of myself in public.

We will be having a Convalidation ceremony soon for our family which is, in the Catholic faith, the same as basically being married all over again. We have been asked by our priest to choose two attendants, the proverbial “maid of honor” and “best man”. According to our priest, these attendants do not need to be Catholic or of any particular religion. Anyone we are close to and feel upholds us in our marriage and supports our family’s choices is a valid option according to him.

DH and I only have one couple we are both close to. They’re great friends of ours and we share LOTS of common values. DH and her husband both served in the military and are disabled veterans so the bond is so much deeper than just “Oh, hi, how are you?” on Sundays. They’ve truly been a blessing and I believe in my heart they have helped to lead DH back to religion in general by showing their true love for each other in Christ. This couple is Mormon. DH and I are in complete agreement that we would love to have them as our “first choice” as we share so much in common with them and they have helped us by having lived a similar life to ours, just 20 years in front of us! 🙂

Is it possible for Mormons to stand up as wedding attendants in a non-Mormon ceremony? I would hate to put these dear friends of ours in an awkward position by asking them and them not being able to participate due to religious reasons.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me on this subject.

My brother is mormon and so is most of my family. As far as I know it is perfectly permissible for them to do it. It boils down to if they personally feel comfortable with it. 🙂

Mormons are allowed inside Catholic Churches and at Catholic weddings. They just won’t be allowed to take Communion, since they are outside (not in communion with) the Catholic Church.

The reverse is not true, since I believe Mormons have to get married in the Mormons-only temple, and non-Mormons aren’t allowed in.

There would be no problem with an LDS person being an attendant at a non-LDS wedding, if invited.

Mormons would have no problems doing that. Your Mormon friends would consider it a privilege to attend your Convalidation service if requested.

:thankyou: :blessyou:

Thank you so much for all of you who answered!!! You’re wonderful!!!

I’m ecstatic to be able to ask them!!!

:extrahappy: :dancing:

Actually not all Mormon couples are “sealed” in the temple for eternity…some are married in the chapel of the LDS ward meeting house…and in that case anyone may attend if invited. Howevver only those LDS in good standing with the bishops approval may enter into a temple…so only LDS are allowed to attend a distinctly Mormon practice and ritual…not intened for “outsiders” not in communion with them according to the dogma and rules of their own church.

If they decide to say “yes” to your request, it will be a great opportunity to answer any questions they might have. 👍

They sound like they are real friends. Those are exactly the kind of folks that seem “made for” your attendents.
Congratulations & God bless.

My best man was Mormon. He just couldn’t return the favor.

In our situation it would be kind of hard to return the favor since they’ve been married for 30 years…

…unless they converted to Catholicism…

…then I would GLADLY return it!!! 😃
