We Christians and most all Messianic Jews believe that Christianity is the fulfilment and completion of Judaism. In Catholicism much of the Liturgy is either based on or a continuation of the Judaic Liturgy. I am quite interested as to what the position of individual Mormons and the LDS Church in general is concerning the Jews.

Great question, Javl. This would include offering sacrifice which is absent from Mormonism (as well as most Protestant denominations).

I’m not sure I am the right one to answer this as I am not an expert on Judeaism…
We believe that the House of Israel is a chosen people…still are.
We believe that the rituals changed when the Law of Moses was fulfilled.
No more circumcision is required, but a circumcised heart.
No more animal sacrifice, that has changed to the Sacrament(Eucharist)
And in response to us not having any sacrifice, well not sure what that is in reference to as we believe our sacrifice we offer now is a broken heart and a contrite spirit.

We believe that Christianity is the fulfillment of Judaism. The coming of the Messiah is an event for which all of humanity had been waiting since Adam and Eve. The Church is the Messiah’s presence on earth. As for the sacrificial aspect, you are correct in that animal sacrifice is no longer sufficient. The only sacrifice acceptable to the Father is that of His Son. It is why we continue to offer the one, the only acceptable sacrifice, each and every day in every Catholic Church in the world.

Javl, yes, you are bringing forth a very good thread…Hope this can continue into the New Year. I am one of those really going more to my place in the Church of the ingrafting.

Yes, John Paul II has even called Catholics fulfilled Jews.

My pastor stated that if we Catholics do not relate and connect with our Jewish roots, we are not really in our Catholic Faith.

There are some very good educational series on HebrewCatholic.org that provide CD’s, MP3’s and some books on Israel and the Church. I am hoping to form a group this coming year to study our Jewish roots and see more deeply the Two Lights, the ingrafting of the wild olive root grafted to the Olive Tree…

Latter-day Saints believe that Jesus was offered to the Son, and that His atoning sacrifice is complete. We now participate in that sacrifice through our saving ordinances, such as baptism, receiving the Holy Ghost, the Sacrament, the Endowment, etc. We now offer to the Father the sacrifice of a broken heart and contrite spirit. For us, it is unnecessary to continually offer Jesus to the Father, since He is now seated at the right hand of the Father, His atoning sacrifice complete, though we are still participating in its effects, which are infinite.

What is the liturgy (or ceremony) by which a Mormon priest offers the sacrifice of a broken heart and a contrite spirit instead of the atoning sacrifice of the Son. Is it something performed in a temple? or is it some other ordinance? I’m very curious.

Peace,
Robert

Thank you for your comment. I still would like to know your thoughts about today’s Jews and Judaism in general. Shalom.

Jesus’ Bloody Sacrifice is complete for the atonement of sin. He doesn’t need to die again.

Only Jesus can atone for sin. Only God can forgive sin. Because sin is an offense against God. That is why when sin is committed against neighbor, it is sin against God.

What is not complete is our propensity to continue sinning. We profess Christ but we continue to sin. Scripture says a just man sins 7 times a day.

That is why we have and need the Daily Sacrifice of the Mass said in every hour of every day all over the entire world…the only Perpetual Sacrifice Melchizedek prophesized…that would atone our sins.

There is sin going on 24/7 in this world. And there is the Daily Sacrifice of the Mass going on 24/7 to atone for our sins.

People need to know here what are the implications of living within a diocese. The Catholic diocese is the local church. It has defined geographical boundaries. The archbishop oversees the welfare of ALL human beings in his diocese, including the non-Catholics.

People need to know that the Daily Sacrifice of the Mass is being offered for us and for the sins of the world.

And this is a Christmas gift to Mormons…

Mormons’ daily sins are being offered up,
Catholics’ sins and Protestants’ sins,
and Muslim sins, and atheist sins,
socialists, communists and Marxists’ sins,
conversatives, liberals, moderates,
young and old’s sins…

Every day, every hour of the day our sins are being atoned for in Jesus Christ at the altar, irregardless of your association. The bishop prays for you, the pastor of your parish boundaries prays for all of you. The Holy Father in Rome prays for all…all blessed in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Merry Christmas!

I am a Mormon.

Mormons believe that the LDS church is mostly of the tribe of Joseph who was sold into Egypt. Therefore, Mormons feel a kinship to Jews. Though the Jews rejected Christ, in the end the Jews will accept him.

Mormons believe that in the Millenium, there will be 2 central headquarters of the church. One will be in Jerusalem and the other will be in the America’s.

And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us ago up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Isaiah 2:3

Pardon me complete ignorance, but how does that work - how do you trace that genealogy? I guess I need a history lesson: who were the original Mormons - were they a single family unit?

Thanks in advance 🙂

Mormons consider themselves Jewish, and actually call Jews “gentiles”. At thier patriarchical blessing they are told which tribe they belong to.

Jewish gentiles???

Thank you for your reply. I agree with Dee_Katia and would also like to know as to how does the LDS Church trace that geneology. I never knew that there existed a tribe of Joseph. I am very interested.

We believe that our lineage is “traced” through revelation. We also believe that through the scattering of Israel, most people are a direct descendant of Israel, and those that are not are adopted in.
The tribes of Israel were after the sons of Israel. Joseph was a son of Israel, however, he is represented through Ephraim and Manasseh

Thank you for the explanation, fly. I now understand the LDS position. I guess, though, that the Jews will have to correct and re-learn their history.

The restoration of the Jews, or more correctly the house of Israel, and the fulfilment of the covenant God made with their fathers, is a central tenet of Mormonism. It is in fact the key to the understanding of the Book of Mormon. The primary object of the Book of Mormon is internally presented as being the means (or one of the means) of facilitating that restoration, and the fulfilling of that eternal covenant God made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob concerning their descendents in the latter days. The Jews, or the house of Israel, are to be restored to the lands of their inheritance, and ultimately to the true gospel. That is the primary message of the Book of Mormon, which it is designed to facilitate.

One of the interesting episodes of Mormon history is the commission Joseph Smith gave to LDS Apostle Elder Orson Hyde to travel to Jerusalem, and dedicate the land for the return of the Jews. Here is an interesting link on the subject.

Thank you Zerinus. Your explanation is quite informative and interesting. I have read the links you have provided. Shalom.

O ye Gentiles, have ye remembered the Jews, mine ancient covenant people? Nay; but ye have cursed them, and have hated them, and have not sought to recover them. But behold, I will return all these things upon your own heads; for I the Lord have not forgotten my people.

2 Nephi 29:5

But thus saith the Lord God: O fools, they shall have a Bible; and it shall proceed forth from the Jews, mine ancient covenant people. And what thank they the Jews for the Bible which they receive from them? Yea, what do the Gentiles mean? Do they remember the travails, and the labors, and the pains of the Jews, and their diligence unto me, in bringing forth salvation unto the Gentiles?

2 Nephi 29:4
