Hi all, what are your view on Mormonthink.org? I have found it most interesting, and enlightening by expanding on those areas of Mormonism that they prefer to hide. What I find difficult to understand is that some of its contributors remain mormon, I can understand from the perspective that maybe their families are involved, and how destructive it might prove to leave. But when they know the truth about mormonism, I just don’t understand how they stay.

Most LDS people hate to admit it, and many won’t, but a lot of what mormonthink puts forward is legitimate and important critique of the LDS faith. I do not know the motivations for why those who help run the site stay active in the LDS faith. Some may still see something to it, some may just like the social aspect of it all. It also might be an attempt by mormonthink to make themselves seem more credible. As a former Mormon I can tell you that commitment to the faith is seen as very important and leaving it behind can be very difficult socially and emotionally. I still haven’t told anyone in my family that I have left the faith.

Sometimes the heritage associated with a particular church is too important to leave behind.

Sometimes individuals will join a church for the purpose of marriage or just to enjoy the benefits of associating themselves with that particular church.

I know people who join or simply stay for the reasons I just gave.

It’s disappointing.

They explain why some stay at their website:

mormonthink.com/whoarewe.htm

For myself, when I want accurate information about LDS teachings, I’ll go to official LDS sources.
Hi JR I appreciate what you are saying but if you only go to their sites, the information you will find there will not be accurate. It is always wise to then compare on sites like Mormonthink which may give a totally different answer/point of view, and enable us all to come to an informed conclusion.:o

Thanks Truthseeker, I hope the time will soon come for you when you can be open with your family it must be a very difficult situation for you. Have they no idea, or are they just not addressing the fact that you may no longer believe? Either way, you are in my prayers

When I want inaccurate apologetics, I go to LDS Sources. When I want what the most acceptable doctrine TODAY, I go to LDS websites. When I want to find what doctrine they have changed as they find out their old doctrine does not work, I go to LDS websites.

I do not go there for truth

Both my parents are aware that I no longer attend the LDS church. They probably believe I will go back someday, and that I still have some faith in the LDS faith. They have no idea I am a catechumen.

God love you and your parents, in my prayers.

I think that Mormon Think is a pretty good website. If anything, it provides a lot of resources for someone to go and check the source. You don’t have to agree with their interpretation, just go back to whatever it is referring to. It brings up issues that are not frequently discussed in Church settings, things that most are not aware of.

I can understand why they stay, presumably for social reasons.

Thanks LW, I know of your own search for truth, I just want to wrap you up in God’s love, and if that is how I feel, well it doesn’t come close to what God feels for you

As a cultural Mormon who no longer believes, I love Mormonthink. I have found it to be mostly balanced with a slight tilt toward criticism - but that’s how I would describe myself. I totally get why some haven’t left. Many families are broken up when a spouse decides to leave because so much is invested in the idea of celestial marriage. The cost is just too high for many. I personally go about 50% with my family. If I found something else I could really believe in fully, it would be closer to 0%.

I became Catholic last year and my LDS parents are still trying to bring me back to the Mormon fold. Just got another LDS apologetics book from them this week! But I know that they are just concerned for me and they think they are acting in my best interests. I think I’ll send them a few Catholic books as well 🙂
