First off, I did ask a priest this question, but I have not heard back yet. I would like to know your opinions so I can decide what to do tonight.

My prayer routine in the morning when I wake up and at night when I go to sleep has gotten to be pretty long, and if I skip some of my prayers or do not decide to pray some of them, I fear it is sloth. Would it be sinful for me to shorten my prayer routine?

You can get rid of some of your prayers if it has gotten too long. We aren’t expected to overburden ourselves with excessive recitations. 🙂

No. I asked a priest from the FSSP about this and he said that we should aim for at least 3 Hail Marys for holiness and purity, and the St. Joseph prayer for purity, as well as our Morning Offering. That being said, it’s actually just an imperfection to not pray in the morning or before bed, though we need to do 15-30 minutes of prayer each day.

I just use the Morning and Night Prayers in the Baronius Press Hand Missal minus the litanies. It takes me about 5 minutes in the morning and 7-10 minutes before bed with the E of C.

I think most importantly is having a set time and a basic routine. The habit of prayer and meditation is a wonderful grace to embrace. With so much worldly nonsense going on, constantly bombarding us, the retreat into prayer is invaluable. Peace be with you.

perhaps this priest was referring to an obligation of priests and religious to pray the divine office, but while it’s a noble goal for there is no such mandate for the laity.

It’s quality of prayer not quantity, and it’s the function of prayer over form that matters.

Whether you pray 3 Hail Mary’s or 100, it may not be worth one moment of pondering the love of God for his creation in a beautiful sunrise, giving praise and glory in our heart without uttering a word!

No, it is definitely not the son of sloth to remove some of your prayers. Just stick with a nice routine, and if there is anything you feel like God our Blessed Lord is calling you to change, then change it.

May God bless you and grant you peace! 🙂

You could move some prayers to other parts of the day - morning drive, shower, etc. It’s not sloth, it’s including God in other parts of your day.

Also, if your routine changes or the burdens on your time changes, it may be necessary to change how you pray and what you pray for. I never prayed as much as I have since I’ve become a father. I find how much I truly do depend on the Lord.
