Ladies, in early pregnancy if you had morning (all day) sickness how did you manage Communion? I know there is an hour fast before receiving but that can be so tricky when crackers are needed to settle the tummy. And what if you are having trouble keeping anything down? On those days do you just go receive a blessing instead?

Under this circumstance, you can probably be excused from the 1 hour fast. When I was pg, I felt like I was going to be sick, but never did. I would never exchange the Eucharist for a blessing.

I think the cracker thing is a good question for the Priest. If it were me, I would not feel guilty for eating a cracker or two despite the fast if it meant that I would be able to make it through mass without throwing up? I mean, you certainly aren’t eating crackers because you enjoy them, right? They almost have a medicinal value? If you were to eat several crackers though 1 hour prior to communion… I wonder if they would be enough to tide you over so that you didn’t get sick? Or maybe you could go to a mass later in the day when you were feeling more stable?

First, gentle hugs and congratulations Charbeau!I spoke with my priest shortly before I went on bedrest. He said that if I was properly disposed and physically up to it, to receive. If I wasn’t up to it, to make a Spiritual Communion. Once or twice I received the Eucharist from an EMHC who was generous enough to make a home visit. There are many Masses offered throughout the day – have you looked into one that is in another Parish at a more “workable” time for you? When I am feeling sickly, I wait to see if it passes. If it does, I go downtown to the 6:00 om Mass. As a last resort, you can speak to your pastor about being dispensed from the one hour fast.XOXOXO
