Mortal Sin and Confession

Is it possible to receive forgiveness for a mortal sin with communal confession or must one go to private confession. Many years ago a nun told me it was o.k. to go to communal confession for a mortal sin. Is this true? Thanks.

Mortal sin can only be forgiven through personal confession.

Better the private confession were the specifics of the sin will be taken into consideration by the priest in giving penance .
