If one purposely doesn’t confess mortal sins out of shame and does is one damned. I did this once and it seems like something a very lax catholic would do. Are they damned automatically? What about those who don’t believe in confession?

Only God can know for sure, because He is the one that judges us. God would understand the man’s reasons and may have pity on him. If the man was sorrowful for those sins, there is the chance that he can be saved.

The Church never says that any particular person is damned, because that does not leave room for God’s mercy.

So, as I said before, God has final say, we do not.

However, it is true that if one dies with mortal sin on one’s soul, then one is damned.

The hope that we have for those with unconfessed mortal sins is that they will achieve perfect contrition and God will have mercy. This would enable them to confess their sins to God and be forgiven at the moment of death.

That would then mean that the mortal sins on their soul were forgiven, and they died without mortal sin on their soul.

However, perfect contrition is part of freedom from attachment to sin, something that is, for instance, a requirement for obtaining a plenary indulgence. St. Philip Neri once celebrated a Mass the attendance at which qualified for a plenary indulgence. He was given the miraculous knowledge that of all the hundreds of people in attendance at the Mass, only he and one old charwoman actually received the plenary indulgence.

So I go to confession regularly! 😊
