I believe I am in a state of mortal sin, but am not fully Catholic yet. What do I do?

have you received valid baptism?

a valid baptism washes away all sins. for a baptism to be valid, it must be done with submersion or pouring of water on the forehead, the use of the Trinitarian Formula (I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit), and there must be proper intent to baptize.

if you are a Christian from another denomination, chances are you may have received a valid baptism. if you are coming into the Church, you will have to wait until you are prepared to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation

if you have never been baptized yet, then await your baptism and all your sins will be washed away

Adding to what Choy said. I have taken to praying that God would preserve me until I could reconcile myself to Him and beyond then if it is His will.

I’m not sure if that’s proper but I’m not sure what else to do until I can receive Reconciliation.

First off…make an act of perfect contrition (out of love of God above all things) …with the intent to go to confession as soon as you “can”. Even mortal sins can be forgiven before confession…though one still needs to confess them later…(and before you become formally Catholic and before receiving Holy Communion )

Now where are you in the process? Were you validly baptized? If not then your baptism when you enter the Church will wash that sin away… if not …then where you are now…have Faith in Jesus Christ…repent of your sins…and prepare…

If you were…where are you in the process?

It can even be at times be possible for you to perhaps receive the Sacrament of Confession …so go talk with the Priest tell him your situation he can talk with the office of the Bishop…even Protestants can receive this Sacrament under certain circumstances…(they would need to …get permission from the Bishop etc) and you have even better circumstances than them…
