Does mortal sin make the sinner hateful in the sight of God?
What does the wrath of God mean in that context?
What judges us? Our consciences or God?

Wrath is the other side of God’s love.

For instance a friend of mine told me that his son was playing so many video games he was putting his exams in jeopardy. I said “I think you’d better ration it”, but I didn’t say anything to the kid himself, I didn’t try to insist. He’s not my child.

Had it been my own son who was risking his future I would have taken much more drastic action, probably got rid of the console altogether. Which doubtless would have caused upset, but been the right thing to do in the long run.

How far was the boy himself to blame? I think we’ve got to say that, by teenage years, you really ought to have enough sense to realise you need exams in this day and age. However video games are very cleverly designed to encourage play. In the end it is a bit of a non-issue. No one is interested in establishing blame, just in undoing the damage.
