Mortal sin easy or difficult to commit?

It can be helpful too to think about:

Mortal sin

(involving: grave matter, full knowledge and deliberate consent)

And then *essentially different *- venial sin.

But among venial sins there are various kinds…such as

“deliberate venial sin” (which gets to your question)

and “semi-deliberate venial sin…” etc

I will continue to believe that all sin is grave matter. I cannot fathom standing before The Lord and excusing myself because I only committed what are considered venial sins.

Point taken

hhmmmm…Gotta ponder that one.
My gut reaction is that I don’t agree with this.

Can one separate the “degree” of charity from the “exercise” of charity?

Peace
James
As you see it more you will more and more for you will be even consoled as you realize such. 🙂

Yes. One has life in Christ – one lives in God or one does not. Period. There is no middle road between life and death.

Venial sin does not touch that life -it is* essentially* different from mortal sin.

One is alive -one has *true life *in Christ --but as one commits more and more venial sins and does not repent of them -such effects the exercise of Charity – and one can even be more disposed to that sin which is of death.

Thankfully venial sins can be forgiven in many ways - and especially with Confession.

Yes all sin is bad -but as Scripture points out -not all sin is deadly …not all sin is mortal (grave). Please read the Catechism above.

One does NOT excuse oneself of venial sins. Such are something we will need to be purified of -here or when we leave this world. Standing before the Lord -such that remain will be indeed venial sins -sins - something that -he will then purify us of. They are not “excused” but they are not mortal sins. Mortal sins means death to the life of grace in the soul.

Venial sins are yes sins and yes something we work against -and yes not something we “excuse”. Rather we “accuse” of ourselves of them of venial sins as what they are - in prayer…at Mass…in Confession…

But we must not make what is venial matter into grave matter. A so called “white lie” is not the same as murder.

Perhaps I am being a bit particular here…but I don’t see the above as answering the question. Can one separate the “degree” - which I mean quality, the quantity, the strength - of charity (Love) from the exercise of it.
I really don’t see how this is possible.

How can one possess a good quality of love - but that love not be exercised?
The very things that effect the “exercise” of charity effects the quality of it. It may not kill it off but but it does do it harm.

James

Venial sin does not lessen the degree. If it did – then perhaps 100,000 venial sins might drain us of charity 😉 (to speak with analogy only).

Venial sins are essentially different than mortal sin. They are very different.

Mortal sin -attacks charity - kills that life of grace in our soul.

To keep your word “harm” – venial sin harms its exercise.

One is still loving --but ones exercise of the love is effected …one does not “loose the life of charity” but one does not exercise that charity as well…

The light of the sun is not effected by the dirty window -the suns rays are the suns rays – the sun is the sun—but if the window is dirty the rays of the sun do not get through as easily…as brightly.

My wife likes when I come back from confession -where my soul gets a particular over-hale --and I exercise my love for my wife better. My selfishness effected such exercise…

Similar happens if I have been selfish and then repent – in prayer and take some holy water or read Sacred Scripture…etc.

One can say too that mortal sin “destroys charity” where as venial sin - “wounds” charity…

A gun shot to the heart destroys life on this earth.

A gun shot to the leg wounds the leg and makes it more difficult to walk…

One lives (one either has life or is dead) -but one may not run as fast…carry as heavy a load…walk as easily…

(so “harm” in that way…ok I can go with that)

“There are many things the knowledge of which does little or no good to the soul.”

“Many words do not satisfy the soul, but a good life comforts the heart and a clean conscience gives great confidence toward God.”

“The Imitation of Christ”
Thomas A Kempis

All sin is grave sin.
No, not necessarily. Grave sin and mortal sin are often used interchangeably. More often, we speak of grave matters, meaning that, if a sin in a grave matter is fully consented to; it’s mortally sinful. But not all sins committed even deliberately are mortal sins.

As to the OP’s question about whether it is easy to commit a mortal sin, the answer really depends on where one is spiritually. If one is living in the state of grace constantly, avoiding the near occasions of sin, frequenting the sacraments, praying often, practicing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy and other acts of charity, etc., than it is going to be quite difficult for him to commit of mortal sin. He still can, but it will be morally difficult. If one is not doing these things, it will be quite easy.

I hope this was helpful,

Amen.

But what knowledge does much good for the soul?

The* knowledge of truth*.

Knowledge of the Word of God and of the Teachings of the Church…

And what words satisfy the soul? -the same

Amen!

Well - I’m afraid that we are (as usual) not going to reach ameeting of the minds.
I suspect that you are much better informed on these matters and my mode of thinking is perhaps too simplistic.

I see all sin as attacking charity because I see all things as founded upon Agape and everything we do either feeds Agape, builds up the Kingdom, or it hurts Agape and works against the Kingdom.

Agape - Love - charity - increases through exercise. If one does not exercise the Love one possesses, then it deteriorates. The quality of one’s charity, that is it’s health, is directly connected to it’s exercise.

Is one to exercise charity? Yes of course -and God can increase it as we do.

Mortal sin of Lust. A course for reduction to almost nothing of lust. fantasies and the resulting action are getting you nowhere. realized that you are feeling emptier and emptier. become angry at evil because it is using you and mocking you. you are volunteering to be its slave. you don’t want to be a slave. Course of action. 1) desire to live a life of purity and chastity. pray daily for chastity 2) maintain custody of the eyes. pray daily 3) maintain custody of your thoughts. pray daily. 4) maintain custody of your words. speak purely. pray daily. Result: you’ll know in a few years. every time you fail go back to number 1. evil will attack you more at first. keep trying. you will have successes. it eventually will become easier. ask St. Augustine to pray with you. he wants to help you. he was infected with lust also. if you have no desire for purity, pray for the desire to desire.
practical advice:
no underwear ads, no bathing suits, no pools, lakes or anyplace else or anything else where skin is revealed-- even inside the church at Mass. (Ladies, men see your exposed breasts and thighs. no it isn’t cute or fashionable) close your eyes during sex scenes on TV or at the movies. don’t watch Spanish language TV-- is mostly soft porn, even the news. I stopped watching all TV and movies. you are in the smoke of a death battle not heavy traffic.

That which we exercise increases at the expense of that which we do not exercise…
so if we are not exercising charity…what ARE we exercising?

I’m reminded of the story that makes the rounds regularly about the two wolves.
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

“My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf wins?”

“The one you feed.”
I wrote while you were writing:
Yea - I think we’ve both been doing some of that. 😃

Do you really mean “effected” or should it be “affected”?
