Mortal sin effects?

Well I slipped up and committed a mortal sin. What is the effect of mortal sin? Shouldn’t I feel different because I blocked God off? This really sucks cause I can’t get to confession till Friday or maybe tomorrow and I feel I did myself a huge disservice.
 
The main effect of mortal sin is that it severs your relationship with God. You shouldn’t necessarily feel anything because of it. If you can’t go to confession today, make a sincere act of contrition (and perhaps one of faith) and entrust yourself into the mercy of God.
 
But if God is the source of all life why shouldn’t I feel something different? If I committed the sin and feel regret only potentially because it hinders my progress in finding God does that mean I’m not actually repentant?
 
Feelings are not indicative of spiritual life.

If so, Mother Theresa would not be a saint.

And your repentance for the reason of being separated from God is the best reason to repent.
 
Committing a mortal sin usually causes someone to feel guilty or to regret what they did. If you feel guilty and regret what you did as it hinders your progress with God than that is repentance. Others sometimes don’t even feel guilt when they do a mortal sin or think what they did was wrong.
 
I don’t feel guilt or shame or anything I merely feel it as a separation of me and the potential God I am trying to find. Is it pointless for me to go to confession until my heart changes?
 
Not at all.

Again, feelings mean basically nothing.

Going to confession for the reason of restoring relationship with God is the best reason.

Unrepentant mortal sin, yes.

in this case, the OP knows that he has severed his relationship with God, and desires to restore that ASAP. That’s just about opposite of unrepentant.

If you die in that state, yes. That’s unless you make an act of perfect contrition before you die. Mortal sin is serious and has eternal consequences.

And even if you go to confession, the temporal punishment remains, which means you have to do penance now or in purgatory after death.

There are 2 types of contrition, perfect and imperfect.

Perfect contrition is when you feel bad because you have disappointed your loving Father. I knew better but scewed up and I am ashamed to have to tell him because he thought better of me than that.

Imperfect contrition is I scewed up real bad and I am going to go to hell because of it.

This is not the best wording in either case but it gets the basics across.

Perfect contrition is the ideal. Imperfect contrition is acceptable.

How do I make a perfect contrition if I don’t even know if God exists?
 
I am struggling with belief in God so how can I have any contrition? Am I damned until I believe?
 
Mortal sin opens you up to committing more sins, probably because of the, “Well, I already messed up” thinking.

You obviously ‘feel’ something if you ‘feel [you] did [yourself] a huge disservice’. The Holy Spirit prompts contrition in many different ways, whether through emotion, thought, etc. Proof of this prompting is: ‘This really sucks cause cant’ get to confession till’…Be joyful that you ‘feel’ that way, because many do not even respond to the prompting of conversion of heart after committing a mortal sin. 🙂

But it’s purely logical. If you want to find someone you build a relationship and this hinders that. That doesn’t invalidate confession?

Why are you putting up so many obstacles here? You question every suggestion offered to you. Look, can’t you just say, “I want to believe but I need Your help”? I’m having my own issues with faith, but I still believe. I’ll tell you this much, if I let go completely, I don’t know what I’d do! So ease up and just let Him help you.

Hey, I know what you’re going through! It’s a rough trip, but as I said, just let yourself go and let God do the rest. That’s what I’m doing. Do you remember the TV series “Kojak”?

Just trust Him!
