I have an addiction to lust in general after experiencing different forms of sexual abuse in my adolescence. Some days are better than others, but the bad days are really bad. Today is one of those days. I’ve only been following the Catholic faith for 2 months and can’t get confirmed until next Easter. I’ve done things before and after knowing God doesn’t want that for us. I feel particularly cut off from Him today.

I’m panicking to say the least. My mom is a STNA and could bring home coronavirus any day now. I have a history of respiratory illnesses and have asthma so if I get it it’s not likely I’d live. My dad lost his job so I don’t have health insurance so I can’t talk to like a therapist or anything about what happened so I can get coping mechanisms. It literally almost controls my life and it feels like I have no hope.

I’m not even sure what I’m asking for. I’m just lost. Anything would be helpful, not sure what to do.

Practical question, were you validly baptized?

If you were, simply talk to the priest who is running your RCIA. He can arrange to hear your confession (priests have been told by their Bishop the manner to keep safe social distancing in Confession).

Remember, God loves you.

Yes. I’m not in RCIA yet & my home parish is back at college so I can’t go there, so hopefully someone in the area can help.

Call the pastor of the parish where you live. He can provide wisdom.

And in the meantime as we cannot get to sacramental confession, say an act of perfect contrition while resolving to go to confession as soon as it’s available. God is not a tyrant, He knows what situation we are in at the moment, and he won’t punish us for the impossible or the imprudent. Catholicism is not a “gotcha” religion.

When we fall into thinking the opposite, we need to remember that is a favourite trick of the devil.

I promise to pray for you. I am in need of confession too. God bless you 🙏

As a fellow unconfirmed adult Catholic (23 years old), I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one in the same boat here. I have actually struggled with this before, and although I still lapse into it (we’re all sinners that Christ came to save!) I’m no longer as prone to such thoughts as I once was.

Here are a few questions (an Examination of conscience, so to speak) that should help you:
In what sort of setting do these thoughts come up in? Are you doing something else and these thoughts come up to distract you, or are doing absolutely nothing and bored? Retrace the steps in your mind backwards and find out exactly what led you to think those thoughts, whether it be a train of thought or a series of actions. If you’re having trouble remembering, ask God to help you, and also ask Him to warn you right before you fall into that trap so that way you can prevent you from falling into sin.

I hope this helps.
