Mortal sin or not

Pornography…

Let’s say someone has a long standing addiction to it…they might think its wrong…but they don’t want to have to stop so they do not inform their conscience…thinking that if they don’t fully investigate then they don’t have to stop. Does this make it mortal…I.e no full knowledge…? Or is their addiction so strong that it does not make them fully free?

BTW…this is a terrible addiction that hurts plenty of people around them and leads to more sins then this…but I just had a question on this part.
 
It doesn’t sound like invincible ignorance to me. Intentional ignorance seems to me like evidence of the desire to commit mortal sin.
 
I think your question is about the affect of addiction on sin. I doubt the question of whether addiction creates a lack of knowledge is a valid question. In general I would say you’re looking for contrition. A contrite addict suffers. An addict who denies their addiction denies the need to be contrite.

We are obligated to properly form our own consciences on serious matters of morality. Failure to do so is the sin of negligence. Negligence may be a mortal sin.

Circumstance, such as addiction, can limit a person’s culpability.

Denial is a symptom of addiction. Addicts often deny the addiction. Denial of the addiction does not mean that they are not contrite for their actions. They may confess these sins and receive absolution without acknowledging the addiction.
 
God loves him too.

Mortal or Venial whatever it is people seem to seperate sins into on this board, are all sins.

He may well be sorry for his sins with God and for us, that is what matters to God. God will know his situation and circumstances and be loving him as he loves everyone. God is amazing. Try not to worry about your friend and his need about whether it sin or not whether he is sorry or not. Only God knows the intentions, worries, sorries of our hearts and any priest that hears them too.

Be there for your friend without judgement and he will then have a good human friend.

From what you describe, they know it’s wrong and search for porn anyway. It would appear they are “informed” just by the thinking that if they don’t “fully investigate” they won’t have to stop.

Informed Conscience

It sounds more like the diminishing or increase in culpability and God will judge culpability.

Some decisions do require more research in order to fully form the conscience, through study. But the goal is to open the mind to the teachings of the Magisterium and to attempt to comport your conscience to the teachings, not deny them. I think porn is pretty much one of the obvious teachings and not an ambiguous moral teaching.

As an ex-addict with God’s help, I say: it is always a full conscience sin, mortal unfortunately. You must pray for him and ask for prayers and help from your priest and friends. Shall mention him in my prayers too.
 
If they don’t know it’s of grave matter to not try and find out if what their doing is of grave matter, even though they suspect it is, they are not guilty of mortal sin.

We may be thinking of different circumstances, for example I know a suffering alcoholic and a reformed alcoholic, it seems neither really understands the damage they did to others. This is due to denial. The current alcoholic is deep in denial. I would agree with you that the actions she commits while drunk are under lower culpability however the issue of excessive drinking and the greater blanket of damage from drinking is fully culpable in my opinion.

Ahhhh…that is where it gets difficult…I am the one he has hurt with this by other actions…I have my own process to work through in forgiving …and when I fail…it is in wondering if those times for me are a mortal sin that led me to wonder about this.:bighanky:

Annabelle, try to forgive him with all your heart as Jesus forgave him I’m certain, after a good confession. Support him with your prayers as I shall do from a very long distance. 🙂

I’m trying to pray for him to go to confession. Being he is my father…and I know he never taught me about confession…I sincerly have my doubts that he has gone. In things that he has said…I don’t think he thinks he needs to… Head in the sand… Which would go very badly for him if he died. Now I don’t know that for sure–that he hasn’t gone to confession but it’s just a gut feeling.

Thanks for praying…you can make up where I fail…

This evening our prayer group prayed a rosary for your father. God bless you Annabelle!
 
Pornographer in itself I would say not. BUT porn usually leads to lust which equals mortal sin.

2354 Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials.
 
Even if it does not cause lust? I have see porn before when I was younger. I just wanted to know how the body worked. I was not “turned on” or nothing.

(now can it happen that full knowledge and deliberate consent can be lacking in a person who say as a young person looked at it? Yes. But in itself it is grave matter.)
