As a agnostic or atheist or who knows what I am at this point. I am attending ash Wednesday service tonight for the first time in years. First off please pray for me in this spiritual crisis of belief. Secondly since I have spent many years in what I am sure is a state of mortal sin do I still receive grace and can god still communicate with me? Do I need to attend confession first? I tried to but they didn’t have availability. I am sure part of why I feel such despair and non belief is closing myself off and I am unsure what to do?

Wow this is the perfect time to come back! Do you receive grace from God? Yes, the fact that you even want it is a phenomenal start! God doesn’t close Himself off. Don’t they have Confession at your parish? In Lent? Book an appointment is what I’d suggest or find a different parish. If you think you are not in a state of grace (ie have an unrepented mortal sin) you shouldn’t receive Communion but that doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t attend Mass or that you don’t get anything from it.

What to do? Pray. Don’t worry, don’t despair. Just talk to God, maybe ask Mary to help you as well and as cliche as this sounds remember that Jesus loves you.

Mark 9:23-25
“Lord I believe, help my unbelief”

Also have you tried reading the Gospel of John? Pick it up, it is a great read.

Much has been discussed here.

What are some good prayers to pray in a state of mortal sin? Moral Theology
Does anyone have some good prayers that they pray when they are in a state of mortal sin? Any good prayers before recieving to the sacrament of reconciliation that would incite repentance?
God is always communicating with us…though not always as a friend from within (thats called sanctifying grace) but a friend from without (actual graces).

Your very desire to repent and go to confession is a consequence of actual graces.
If you act on them you will have God live within you (like the engine catching instead of just turning over the starter motor all the time with great effort).

So pray always, act on your repentance before the actual grace wears off.
So go to confession.
If you make an act of perfect contrition with the intent to go to confession asap then you will receive sanctifying grace.

You should not go to Communion before Confession if you are aware of being in a state of grave sin.
