Hey y’all, was hoping that some people who know more about the Faith than I do could help me out here. I am currently in a different state for my national ultimate frisbee tournament, and I’m struggling to find a way to get to mass. I am staying in a house with my teammates and our coaches are our source of rides. My parents are one Minnesota as well (staying at a hotel nearby), however. Usually in the case of a sports tournament I’m staying with my parents, and can make mass sometime Saturday night or Sunday. I never miss mass for sports if at all possible, and haven’t at all in the past year for any of my club volleyball tournaments. This weekend is different however since I am staying with my team instead of my parents, and it goes from Friday-Monday. I really don’t want to miss mass as it is the highlight of my week, and it is so beautiful to be able to receive the Eucharist, so I have looked to find mass times near me that my parents could potentially pick me up and take me to, but I’m struggling to find a time that works. Aside from games I also have team dinners to go to and other teams games to watch with my team.

I had heard some people say that it isn’t a mortal sin to miss mass for a “just” reason, such as travel, difficulty getting to mass, etc, but I didn’t know if this was the case, and I was unable to ask a priest before I left for the trip. Just for additional information I am 17 years old and would consider myself a devout Catholic. I attend mass every weekend at the very least, and go to confession regularly. I don’t want to commit any mortal sins that could compromise my ability to go to Heaven before I’m able to go to confession if necessary, so I’m hoping someone could give me some guidance. Thank you!!

For you with the conditions you described it can’ t be a mortal sin. It might be a venial sin. To be a mortal sin you really have to want to offend God.

Next time, look into this before you are in the middle of the tournament. If there is no way to get to Mass, or, if it helps you feel better, ask your priest for dispensation.

No one expects a teenager to venture out alone in a city she does not know to get to Mass.
