Mortal Sin?

I am worried that I may have committed a mortal sin, but I worry about this a lot and it may not be a mortal sin so any comments would be great. We are having final exams, and the class that I am in has an exam coming up. One class already took this exam and knows what material the teacher is going to use. Since our test is over everything we have learned this semester, our teacher gave us the previous exams that we had to study from. Someone I know knows someone in the class that already took the exam. I asked this person if we should only know the material on the exams he gave back. That person said that all we need to know for the exam is the previous exams he gave back. I feel as if I have given myself an unfair advantage over the class that already took the exam since I know what to focus my studies on. Is this a mortal sin?

The teacher gave back exams to study from. Me, I would have studied from those exams, because that’s what we did in Electronics Engineering technology and STILL some people only got B’s and C’s.
If it were my call, I’d say your culpability lies in not trusting God. If that’s a mortal sin, we’re all doomed. You are already afraid, frightened and repentant. I suggest you go to confession and give the facts first, then tell the priest what you are afraid you did.

Idk i feel as if I just get really paranoid about things and feel as if I am cheating by having an advantage over the other class. And then when this happens Im not sure if i should receive the Eucharist at Mass because I am worried I might be in mortal sin.

OK, first of all you don’t have an advantage over the others because he gave you the same study materials.

Secondly, it sounds like you may have some tendencies towards scrupulosity if you constantly think you are sinning. So, you need to get under the regular spiritual direction of a priest who can help you with this problem.

I don’t see how this is a sin at all. First of all 1. The teacher gave you the study guides. It was the teacher’s decision to do so, plenty of teachers do it, who knows what the other teacher is doing.

1. Its not like you asked your friend for the exact answers. You still have to study hard, its still your knowledge.

Here’s my understanding about mortal sin:
to be mortal, a sin has to involve grave matter (stealing 2 pennies wouldn’t be grave),
it has to involve knowledge (you have to know that it’s wrong),
it has to be done with full consent (no one is forcing you, or you’re not half-asleep).

So it appears that one cannot commit a mortal sin without knowing it, and willing to do it. That makes it easier to avoid sins, we just need to determine that we won’t do them, and follow through.
