Greetings,

Situation: A person is in a state of mortal sin for some time, and during this time, he receives communion on several occasions. He then goes to confession and receives absolution for the mortal sin. Does he continue to be in a state of mortal sin due to receiving communion in the previous state, even though he was given absolution?

Peace be with you.

Once you go to confession, all sins that were not purposly not confessed are forgiven.

I believe the confession for the first mortal sin would take care of the mortal sin of not going to communion if you forgot to mention it. If your intent going into the confessional was that you were only going to confess the mortal sins that you felt comfortable confessing, then you might have a problem. Your parents didn’t like it when you lied to them…I doubt our Heavenly Father cares much for it either. Besides, it’s not like you can keep a secret from Him.

If you find yourself in a state of mortal sin…don’t receive communion. It’s only adding salt to the wound.

If the person confessed the mortal sin, he should at the same time confess that he received communion several times while in a state of mortal sin.

If he left that part out ON PURPOSE, then it’s another mortal sin.

If he left that part out *by mistake or in ignorance * that it must be confessed, then it’s not another mortal sin. But it should be mentioned in the next confession.

Find a good priest, look him square in the eye, and pour your heart out. I did, and have never felt better.
