I was born Catholic and left; then came back, and I will admit I dont know much about the church. My question has to do with mortal sin.

What is mortal sin?

What are the mortal sins?

And who , what or how were these sins established in the church? Are they in the bible?

Thanks from a student catholic learner.

Mortal sin is sin that is serious enough to separate you eternally from God should you face judgement.

Mortal sins are not spelled out in Scripture, but I would refer you to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, of which a copy should be kept by every Catholic next to one’s Bible.

There are certain conditions that are involved in the commission of mortal sin, the most prevalent of which (I think) would be violations against chastity in this day and age.

In the New Testament (James or John, I think), there is a distinction between a sin that “leads to death” and one that does not. Furthermore, Jesus suggested that Judas committed a “greater sin” than Pilate, demonstrating degrees of severity.

Question: For a sin to be Mortal one must have full knowledge of it’s sinfulness and severity. Protestants may know that “the Catholic Church” says contraception is a mortal sin (under the usual circumstances) but does that constitute mortal sin since they do not have full knowledge of the infallibility of the Church. Many catholics know what the Church teaches in the same regard, but sincerely believe that since an ex cathedra statement on the issue is lacking, that this may not be God’s word on the subject? How “full” is the knowledge in these cases? (I think my question is rhetorical…)

I’m confused, having just come back to this sacrament myself,. According to this list, deadly hsins are venial sins and don’t have to be confessed?

Try reading the examination of conscience again. It does not say that. The first group of analysis of the 10 commandments are the mortal variety then second analysis is the venial and imperfections.
It is also a good thing to confess venial sins although it is not required.
